Racing across America... racing toward a cure

Although our giving page is no longer active, you can still donate. If you would like to provide any additional support to our project, please do so here.

I've biked since I was a kid.  Even after going head first over my handlebars when my front wheel came off, I've been hooked.  Now, I ride for my love of cycling and to help with my struggle against depression and anxiety.  Life is full of adversity and cycling has been my cure...now I hope to use it to help in the fight against breast cancer.

This summer I was asked to join a 4-person team to participate in the Race Across America (RAAM), a race that spans over 3,000 miles across 12 states and climbs 170,000+ feet.  Teams have 9 days to complete the race that begins in Oceanside, California and ends in Annapolis, Maryland.  It is one of the most respected and longest running ultra-endurance events in the world.  To put it in perspective, the 2020 edition of the Tour de France covered 2,156 miles and 156,398 feet of climbing in 23 days.  The race begins on June 19, 2021.  You can learn more about the race at http://raceacrossamerica.org/ and can follow our progress during the race via live-tracking on the website.

Our team- Team enso Cycling- is comprised of myself, spouse to a breast cancer survivor and son and nephew to two amazing women who lost their battles with breast cancer, two Air Force veterans, and a thyroid cancer survivor.  We want RAAM to be more than a race- we are using it as a platform to raise funds to help people facing challenges greater than most of us may ever face.  We are each riding to support charities with special meaning to us.  For myself, I am riding to support the Stefanie Spielman Breast Cancer Fund.

Stefanie was a classmate of mine since the 1st grade.  She never self sorry for herself or asked "why me".  Instead she found purpose, as detailed in the book "That's Why I'm Here".  We don't have a choice with what challenges we are faced with, but we certainly can choose our response.  Her response was to support those affected by placing an emphasis on prevention through mammograms and celebrating those who are caregivers through "Stefanie's Champions".

We chose the team name Enso... the enso circle representing enlightenment, strength, the universe.  Adversity affects us all...it's our response that defines us.  Our hope is that as a team, we will have the strength to respond to these challenges and RAAM is sure to provide us with many.

Help us support the Stefanie Spielman Breast Cancer Fund by making a donation.  The process is fast, easy, and secure, and for every donation made, I'll match that donation until my goal is reached.  We truly appreciate any support you can provide, and it benefits a great cause!  If you can't make a donation at this point, help us reach our goal by sharing this page on Facebook and Twitter!  Or, even better, send an e-mail to friends you think might be interested in contributing and include a link to my page!

Thanks so much for your generosity!
