2023 Dean's Charity Steer Show Event Details:

  • Date: Tuesday, August 1, 2023
  • Time: 2:00 p.m.
  • Location: Voinovich Livestock & Trade Center at the Ohio Expo Center & State Fair

Celebrate Ohio agriculture, communities and children at the 2023 Dean’s Charity Steer Show. Teams will consist of a Team Captain, Team Champion, experienced 4-H youth and a steer in the show ring. The event will be hosted by Cathann A. Kress, vice president and dean of The Ohio State University’s College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences (CFAES). All proceeds will benefit Ronald McDonald House Charities of Central Ohio. The Steer Show is coordinated by CFAES, Ohio Cattlemen’s Association, Telhio Credit Union and the Ohio State Fair.


Team Bios:

Connor Yochum is from Hillsboro, Ohio in Highland County where he lives on a farm with his parents, Chip and Shannon, and older sister, Emma. His family raises Maine-Anjou and Chianina cattle along with soybeans and hay. Connor will be in the eighth grade at Hillsboro Middle School this fall where he is a three-sport athlete playing football, wrestling and baseball. He is also active in the National Junior Honor Society and FFA. Connor is an 8-year 4-H member who has been showing cattle since he was 4 years old and exhibiting them in 7 states so far. He will be showing his steer, “Joe Burrow”, at the Dean’s Charity Steer Show.

Matt Barnes is the morning co-anchor of NBC4 Today, a position he took in January 2016. He joined the NBC4 staff in May 2010 as a sports anchor and reporter. He is a proud graduate from the E.W. Scripps School of Journalism at Ohio University. As a native of Columbus, being out and about in the community is very important to him. He is an avid volunteer and supporter of the Ronald McDonald House in Columbus, serving on the board and as a member of the Red Shoe Society.

Monica Day co-anchors NBC4 Today. She joined the NBC4 staff in February of 2006. Monica is a graduate of Whitehall Yearling High School. She was crowned Miss Ohio USA 2008 and represented The Buckeye State in the Miss USA competition where she won the title of Miss Congeniality. The thing Monica likes most about her job is the opportunity to be involved with local charities and events. Monica has been very active in raising awareness of ovarian cancer during her time at NBC4 and is an avid supporter of The Ronald McDonald House, BESA and Harmony Project.

Meteorologist, McKenna King, joined the NBC4 team in January 2022. McKenna grew up in Northern Utah and earned her degree in broadcast journalism from Brigham Young University. A Utah native, McKenna loves the outdoors. She loves to ski and snowboard, as well as getting outside for a bike ride, hike or take her golden retriever, Polly, on a walk around the city. McKenna is also a proud Disney-adult and Magic Keyholder at both U.S. Disney parks, which is where she spends most of her vacation time, donning a pair of Mickey ears.

Kristine Varkony first joined the NBC4 team in early 2017. She is a multifaceted journalist who equally loves anchoring, producing, covering Ohio State football, live interviews and breaking news. A Buckeye from day one, Kristine was raised on a farm in the Ohio Valley (Jefferson County) and attended Steubenville Catholic Schools. She earned her degree in journalism from The Ohio State University— while interning at NBC4 her senior year. Kristine loves exploring and attending events in the Cap City, being outdoors, traveling, exercise classes and trying new restaurants.
