Cohort International Expedition to Brazil

January 24, 2018

Greetings, all! For this update we've asked fellow Cohort student Madeline Furash to give her review of our recent trip to Brazil! Enjoy.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

As 2017 came to an end, twenty-five students from the Honors Cohort Program traveled to Brazil. This international expedition took us from the bustling business center of São Paulo to the historic beachfront city of Rio de Janeiro. Throughout this experience, we met with both American and Brazilian multinational enterprises across a wide range of industries from government and nonprofit organizations to raw material sourcing (e.g., mining, oil, and gas). In addition to business exploration, we experienced Brazilian culture through visits to iconic tourist attractions, such as Christ the Redeemer and Sugar Loaf Mountain, as well as local sights, such as Iberiapuera Park and the Vila Madalena neighborhood.

An imperative objective of the expedition was to widen our perspectives. Many representatives of companies were open to our questions and adapted their presentations to our interests. As the largest producer of iron ore in the world, Vale spoke in-depth about mining processes and its business implications. This meeting exposed us to the unfamiliar industry of mining and provided insight on the operations of a Brazilian-based company. In contrast, the meeting with the British-Dutch multinational company Shell discussed the various challenges they face adapting to Brazil’s diverse culture and dynamic economic landscape. Despite the differences in organizations, the meetings had common themes: political and educational differences between Brazil and the United States, the current economic recession in Brazil, and the unique dynamics of business in a developing country.

Perhaps the most popular meeting took place with a local nonprofit, Business Professional Women. We heard from a panel of three individuals: Sonal Gupta, Fisher senior and founder of Women with Will; Ty Shepfer, Senior Lecturer at Fisher and Program Coordinator for Honors Cohort; and Marianna Depereon representing ONU Muheres, a Brazilian nonprofit focused on building a community of business women. The enlightening conversation unveiled the similarities between issues faced by men and women in both the United States and Brazil. Erin Halleran, a member of the 20th Honors Cohort, shared that “it was fascinating to see such commonalities across countries. If the problems span borders, it is likely the solutions could too.” As globalization continues to connect different corners of the world, it is encouraging to see cross-continental panels of business professionals come together to offer advice and collaborate on the same issues.

Another popular meeting took place at the US Department of Commerce & International Trade Administration with the Consul General, James Story. When describing his work experience related to US foreign affairs, Story claimed it was “the best job for someone who does not like a stable job”. He also spoke about the importance of understanding Brazilian culture, the promotion of US trade, and the challenges around foreign diplomacy. We left this meeting filled with curiosity and contemplation around a potential career in Foreign Service with the Department of State.

The primary goal of this program was two-fold: increased awareness of the impact that politics, culture, and history on the economy of Brazil; and an increased understanding of the economic opportunities and challenges faced by a major emerging economy. Prior to departure, we were asked to list our objectives of the trip. Similar to the goals of the program, Honors Cohort student Meredith Rintoul strived to “be challenged and to think in a way [she] never has before”. Another student, Tom Marienello, stated “to better understand the Brazilian perspective on global issues and expand [his] perspective of global business”. We were advised by program director Ty Shepfer to “have the mindset of trying to extract the most value from this trip as possible”.

It was the rich content of meetings, the delectable local cuisine, and the unforgettable experiences at local attractions that accomplished both the goals of the program and the students.

First Day of "Spring" Semester

January 08, 2018

Greetings from a snowy Columbus, Ohio.

We want to say thank you to everyone who has supported the Honors Cohort program throughout the beginning part of the school year. We are back on campus today for a chilly start to the first day of spring semester.

An update is coming soon on the December international trip. With your support we traveled to Brazil to represent Ohio State, Fisher and Cohort to local alumni and members of the business community. More to come soon!

Now we leave you with a photo from a fellow Ohio State student, Jake Ryan. O-H!

Thank you again,

-The 20th & 21st Cohorts

Time flies when you're studying for finals!

December 07, 2017

It's hard to believe we are already at the end of Autumn Semester - today is reading day, marking 1 day before finals commence on Friday. We wanted to take a break and give an update on our involvement in the college's signature day of service - FISHER IMPACT DAY!

For the third year in a row, Fisher Impact Day has celebrated Veterans Day with a day of service. On November 10, over 1,000 Fisher students, faculty & staff participated by volunteering time and talent to local non-profits. There were volunteer opportunities to send care packages to veterans abroad, make blankets for children in foster care, pack activity bags for patients at Nationwide Children's hospital and many more.

With your donations -- from students, alumni, family & friends -- Cohort was able to sponsor one of the Impact Day activities this year.

We gathered a group of 100, including Cohorts + our fellow students and Fisher faculty & staff to "Feed the Funnel." We assembled food care packages, providing 30,672 meals for our neighbors in the Columbus community as well as those recently affected by natural disasters around the country.

A commitment to social responsibility is core to Cohort. We thank you for helping us pay forward.

THANK YOU!

-The 20th & 21st Cohorts

P.S. We're leaving soon for our business trip to Brazil. We cannot wait to update you on our meetings, presentations, and cultural experiences when we get back.

Autumn 2017 Cohort Trip to Chicago | Recap

November 13, 2017

Greetings! As the semester continues on, we wanted to provide an update on the trip to Chicago last month.

The junior Honors Cohort students spent fall break in the Windy City exploring different career options ranging from consulting to private equity, from professional sports to entrepreneurship, venture capital and everything in between. The trip was eye-opening for us students to see all the different paths our careers might take them. The three days in Chicago were filled with site visits that allowed us to not only learn about different industries but to feel what it might be like to work in these different environments.

Fellow cohort alumni Elizabeth Entinghe & Mohit Bathija and Fisher staffers Amanda Ritchey & Amy Milbourne were instrumental in planning the trip - we thank them for insights and connections around the city. Moe & Peggy Modecki helped sponsor the trip - we thank them for their support of the program!

And we thank all of you, your support of the Cohort program throughout the year allows us students access to companies here in Columbus, around the U.S., and the world. This access to business and community leaders is a great benefit of being in Cohort and truly makes for an exemplary experience.

Stay tuned for more updates - Cohort was recently able to sponsor a portion of and participate in the 3rd Annual Fisher Impact Day and will be traveling to Brazil for a series of business cases and meetings with organizations there next month.

Thank you again and Go Bucks!

Throwback Thursday - 10th Cohort Edition

October 05, 2017

The Cohort program has a strong tradition of bridging the classroom and the boardroom. The support from Cohort alumni and our friends & family makes this tradition remain an experience we students look forward to throughout the academic year. In addition to meeting with executives in Columbus, the 21st Cohort has the opportunity to travel to Chicago during Fall Break next week for meetings with business executives and networking experiences.

We wanted to take a moment to say thank you

And we wanted to share a #tbt photo of the 10th Cohort on a trip in 2007 to visit A.D. Farrow. Do you see anybody you know?!

Stay tuned for an update on next week's trip coming soon!

"You can only pay forward" - Woody Hayes

September 15, 2017

Last week over 40 Cohort alumni returned to Fisher for their Fall Board Meeting. These alumni are dedicating their time to the future success of this amazing program. Some of highlights included meeting with current students to learn about the projects we're working on, hearing from Dean Anil Makhija on the strategic vision for Fisher, committee meetings to define goals for the coming academic year, and a review of ways to get further engaged with the Cohort program.

One of the ways alumni & friends engage with Cohort students is through a mentorship program. Many of the Advisory Council members also serve as mentors and role models to current students.

"My mentor is one of the primary reasons I got my internship and my now full-time offer. She prepped me for the recruitment process, connected me to all the right people, and was a constant support all the way up to the offer." Hannah Sagel, 20th Cohort

"My mentor Elizabeth and I have grown very close through frequent touch points. She has become a role model for me personally and professionally, and has helped me figure out the interests that I will pursue after graduation." Sonal Gupta, 20th Cohort

We are so appreciative of those who chose to support the Honors Cohort Program through their time, talent and treasure. THANK YOU. We look forward to updating you more as the academic year continues!

GO BUCKS!

A great day of interview prep!

September 12, 2017

The 21st Cohort had the incredible opportunity today to partake in a “Super-Day” of back-to-back interviews on September 5. Similar to many of the interviews that our students will experience as they seek to lock-in internships for next summer, the Cohort members participated in six consecutive interviews. They benefited from in-depth feedback, face-to-face interactions with recruiters, and experience in how different companies and industries change their interview styles. This experience came just in time, as the Fisher Fall Career Fair kicked off the fall recruiting season the very next day.

Thank you to our nine great sponsors that help to make the Cohort Program what it is! And to our donors whose support helps put on professional development programs like this throughout the year.

Meet the 20th Cohort!

September 06, 2017

Now that you've been introduced to our newest Cohort, we'd like to introduce the 20th Cohort. As fourth years we are entering our second year of Cohort - and have to say the experience has been life changing. Many of you are alumni and know that this is a special program, not only in building our professional acumen but also in creating a lifelong friendships. We had exceptional experiences last year and look forward to paying forward as alumni. We thank our many donors who support Honors Cohort - the impact of your gifts has given us a transformational experience!
