SAFECON 2019 Results!

May 23, 2019

-- Ohio State Flight Team Finishes Top-Ten at NIFA National SAFECON 2019 --

The Ohio State Flight Team returned home on Sunday from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in Janesville, WI after another successful and fun week at NIFA National SAFECON 2019.

Twenty-nine schools from around the nation descended upon Janesville and Madison to vie for the National Championship title. Southern Wisconsin Regional Airport (JVL), which normally has less than 100 operations per day, hosted more than 1,000 operations during the peak days of competition and practice. Our week in Wisconsin proved mostly to be quite chilly, but yet most of the team returned home with some form of sunburn; amazing how that happens!

I am pleased to announce that of the 29 schools, the Ohio State Flight Team placed 8th Place Overall National Champs: 6th in Flying Events, 8th in Ground Events.

The Ohio State Flight Team once again represented the University in Buckeye pride and enthusiasm. The 12 team members, led by co-captains senior Jonah Desrochers and junior Bryon Lord and coaching staff, had another tremendous competition experience. Our team once again showed professionalism, competitive excellence, and great attitudes during the week. We are always the team which does very well and are fun people to be around on the ramp. It has encouraged other schools to take our lead.

We welcomed three new team members this year as well: Zoe “Goodall” Karan, Will “Shotgun” Ogg, and Devyn “Truman” Thurman. As usual, even Janesville felt like Columbus with the number of alumni that showed up to support the team. A big thank you to Rob Numbers, Josh Fisher, Nick Mortensen, and Scott van Ooyen for helping coach the team while on the road. It was also great to see Jason Fischer, Sean Maxwell, Mike McConnell, Emily Coaker, David Maibaum, Adam Stiffler, and Glenn McConnell. We were even able to get three former and one current head coach in the same spot for a picture; a pretty cool legacy.

This coming summer, we will be looking at our operation as a whole to develop a revised strategic plan. This all-inclusive plan will continue to expand our team and elevate it the top tiers of collegiate aviation competition. That National Championship is always the goal.

I’d personally like to thank the College of Engineering, the Center for Aviation Studies, OSU Airport, our tremendous industry sponsors, alumni, parents, and students who make this all happen. A special thank-you to the OSU Aircraft Maintenance Shop for getting us a radio to Janesville overnight after N500SU’s had a mid-flight failure.

Please join us in congratulating the OSU Flight Team for their continued success at NIFA SAFECON. Regionals 2019 will be hosted here at Ohio State in October. Oshkosh, Wisconsin has been selected for Nationals 2020, to be hosted by EAA. We would love for you to join us at either competition. I've attached a few pictures in better quality; please feel free to share these if you'd like!

Week 4: Making a Buckeye Funder

April 30, 2019

What a month it has been! As our BuckeyeFunder campaign comes to a close, we want to thank everyone who made this such a success. It has proven to be better than we ever expected. We hope you have enjoyed the team video updates throughout the month and seeing exactly what your money goes toward.

As you can imagine, it took a few takes to get the videos just right, so enjoy this last update which highlights the "making of a BuckeyeFunder." At 11:59 PM this evening, our BuckeyeFunder donation portal officially closes. We will still be accepting financial support through our normal OSU Foundation Giving page as normal, by clicking here

Once again, thank you for being a part of our BuckeyeFunder campaign and supporting the Ohio State Flight Team. We will get an update out when we are in Janesville, Wisconsin, and will be sure to pass along the week's results. Be sure to stay connected with us via social media for competition updates.

Week 3: We Did It! and Stretch Goal

April 22, 2019

WE DID IT! Thanks to you, we have surpassed our goal of $20,000 in just 19 days. This is an incredible testament to the network of alumni, friends, and family that is the Ohio State Flight Team. We are just over two weeks from our departure to Wisconsin and we could not be more excited to travel and represent Ohio State.

Thank you for getting us to 100%.

To take advantage of the last week of our Buckeye Funder campaign, we've added a stretch goal of an additional $2,500 which will take us to $22,500. This increased goal will allow us to install ADS-B In technology, on top of the FAA mandated ADS-B Out technology which was included in our original goal. Having ADS-B In will allow us to receive weather forecasts, radar, and live traffic directly to our onboard iPad's and aircraft GPS. ADS-B Out will keep us compliant; ADS-B In will keep us informed and on top of our game while in the sky.

Week 2: What is ADS-B?

April 15, 2019

We are officially half-way through our Buckeye Funder campaign and have passed 50% of our goal. Thank you, thank you, thank you! This Saturday we had another great opportunity to hone our skills both in the air and on the ground.

Only 24 days remain until SAFECON 2019 kicks-off in Wisconsin and we can't wait to represent Ohio State on the national stage. Your support continues to fuel our practice as we diligently prepare to leave it all on the runway.

Are you curious about what exactly ADS-B is? Check out this week's video update where team members Junn Shimizu and Matthew Chien explain this new technology and how it benefits our team.

Week 1: Practice at the Line

April 08, 2019

What a week it has been! We have made it over 25% to our goal. Thank you to all of our supporters far and wide. Your contributions directly impact our experience and we couldn't do it without you. We look forward to keeping you in the loop showing exactly where your support goes as we prepare and travel to Nationals 2019 in Wisconsin!

The weather is improving daily as it appears Spring is here. That means our airplanes will be flying more and competition is closer and closer. We have about 75% of our goal to go, help us spread the word to meet that!

Here is an quick video update from our practice at the runway on Saturday, showing off our spot-landing competition practice. It was a beautiful day and were able to get some awesome practice in with our alumni and coaches. Check it out!
