Her love for family, children, and community was evident in every aspect of her life. Together, Spencer and Monique created a life centered on family, friendship, service, and connection. Your support will allow Kuhn House to continue evolving. For 100 years, Kuhn House has stood as a beloved landmark in Ohio State’s Mirror Lake District. With your support, we can honor its history while modernizing its spaces for the next generation of Buckeyes. <strong>History</strong> Kuhn House was built in 1926 as the university president’s second residence before transitioning to serve as the home for the <strong>University Honors and Scholars Center</strong>, <strong>Undergraduate Research & Creative Inquiry</strong>, and the <strong>Undergraduate Fellowship Office</strong>. Spaces throughout the house are home to quiet study areas and play host to community events for several student groups.    <strong>Recent Renovations</strong> In 2025, Kuhn House completed a full renovation of its communal kitchen, blending Tudor-style charm with modern functionality. Collaboration and community-building was at the heart of the renovation planning. The kitchen plays host to many events, from cultural exploration through cuisine or de-stressing by baking together. Make a gift in memory of Dr. Scott Bennett. <p>$141,350 toward our goal of $150,000 helping us honor Dr. Scott Bennett </p><p><br></p> The funds raised will provide financial support to an Ohio State University 4th year Doctor of Veterinary Medicine student who plans to pursue a career in equine medicine, with preference given to a student interested in pursuing a residency in equine surgery. Established in honor of the memory of Dr. Scott Bennett, DVM (OSU 1977) (ACVS), this scholarship will continue his life-long legacy of developing young practitioners in the art and science of equine veterinary medicine and surgery and honor his passion for the equine, particularly his love for The American Saddlebred.  An avid breeder and owner of American Saddlebred horses, Dr. Bennett was awarded the 2019 Lifetime Achievement Award by The American Saddlebred Horse Association.   Once the fund passes the $100,000 threshold, our collective gifts will guarantee annual scholarship distributions <strong>forever</strong>.  Dr. Bennett graduated from Ohio State at the age of 23, one of the youngest graduates ever in the history of the school. Even while in school, he participated in pioneering surgical work on one of the first successful canine hip replacement surgeries.  But his true passion was horses and within five years of graduation, he established Equine Services, a state of the art 24-hour ambulatory and equine surgical facility in Simpsonville, Kentucky. Through his three-plus decade career, Dr. Bennett lead the profession by introducing and perfecting techniques in equine reproduction, diagnostic modalities and regenerative therapies for soft-tissue injuries. Surgery was his true passion and he loved demonstrating and sharing the techniques he developed over the years through both direct education and participation in industry events. Professionals and amateurs alike in the horse business remember Dr. Bennett with the highest praise for his care and skill in caring for their beloved steeds – rescuing many horses from seemingly career-ending injuries and illnesses. But just as important to Dr. Bennett as the direct care given to his patients was the mentoring of students, interns and young veterinarians (and even horse owners who just wanted to understand more about the treatments their horses were receiving).   Dr. Bennett truly deserved the labels of “Pioneer/Mentor/Innovator”, and we hope you will join us in helping the next generations of Ohio State University veterinary students to follow his and their passionate love - the care of horses. <a href="https://buckeyefunder.osu.edu/project/22048/donate">Make your gift</a> today to support the Dr. Scott Bennett Scholarship in Equine Veterinary Medicine! Make a gift to support cancer research in memory of Lisa and Michael. <p><span class="fr-deletable">[[Amount Raised]]</span> raised from <span class="fr-deletable">[[Gifts Received]]</span> gifts</p> It was 2009 when Lisa, age 29, learned of the brain cancer diagnosis. To say this came as a surprise is an understatement. Lisa was pursuing her master’s degree at The Ohio State University, and through her surgeries and treatment she successfully acquired that degree and worked in the field as a speech and hearing pathologist. At the same time, Lisa’s brother, Michael, was diagnosed with metastatic melanoma, stage IV. His battle would ensue to a much more serious level at a later date. In 2014, prior to going into Hospice care and passing away, Lisa made last requests to me. One of her requests of me was to continue fundraising in an effort to keep other families from enduring a brain cancer diagnosis and going through what our family had experienced. We have continued our fundraising efforts to fulfill that very commitment to Lisa. Progress has been made toward fulfilling that wish, but we have a long way to go. Lisa was 33 when she died. Michael’s journey with melanoma ended in 2022 when he succumbed to the disease at the age of 47. Melanoma is an underfunded disease in the way of research, education and awareness. Many of our family and friends were shocked that melanoma could be such a brutal cancer and a potentially fatal disease. The goal is to change that and raise awareness while educating the public on the severity of this disease. Our family has endured a tremendous loss and the reminders of that are ever-present. Raising funds for both brain cancer and melanoma research has been and continues to be a positive action that gives us great hope for a cure for both diseases.

Make a gift to support the Charlie's angels student fund. <p><span class="fr-deletable">[[Amount Raised]]</span> raised from <span class="fr-deletable">[[Gifts Received]]</span> gifts</p> Charlie was a 15-year-old Havanese whose family started the Charlie's Angels fund to support the efforts of the dedicated students and doctors at The Ohio State University College of Veterinary Medicine. These special people use their talents to help animals like Charlie live longer and healthier lives, and save them from all forms of diseases and challenges. They are angels to the animals and families they work with. Charlie's family established this fund to give back and help them become better veterinarians. Charlie’s Angels was established to provide financial support to students so they can obtain practical experiences outside the classroom. The fund covers their expenses so they can work with other veterinarians, animal caregivers, zoos and shelters. This experience gives them the understanding of what new veterinarians may face in their future endeavors, while connecting with alumni and friends of the college. There has been a growing number of students taking part in these experiences which in turn, will allow them to become better veterinarians. Due to this increased interest in students, the need to grow this fund has become even more important. Support the fight against Inflammatory Breast Cancer <p>[[Amount Raised]] raised from [[Gifts Received]] donors</p> <strong>Her Legacy, Our Fight: Eradicating Inflammatory Breast Cancer</strong> On August 21, 2009, our world shattered. Our beloved Lori, at just 32 years old, was diagnosed with Inflammatory Breast Cancer (IBC). Her daughter was a baby of six months, and her son was just four. A compassionate family physician who had just started her practice, Lori discovered a warm, hard area on her breast, easily mistaken for a common infection like mastitis. Despite negative mammogram and ultrasound results, Lori, guided by her medical intuition, self-referred to a breast specialist. It was then that the devastating truth emerged: Stage IV Inflammatory Breast Cancer. IBC is a ruthless disease, often presenting in late stages. Lori’s was already metastatic. In January 2013, at the tender age of 36, Lori passed away. We miss her more than words can express. While we cannot bring Lori back, we can and will continue the powerful legacy she ignited. Lori was incredibly selfless, always putting others first. She wanted to raise awareness and research funds for this aggressive form of breast cancer. Before she left us, she started a fundraising event called the Hunt for Hope. This joyous event blossomed, eventually transforming into Strikes Against Cancer. Together, these initiatives have raised over $750,000 for inflammatory breast cancer research. Lori’s treatment often required extensive travel to MD Anderson in Texas to access cutting-edge research and clinical trials. She dreamed that women in Columbus could receive the same top-tier care without leaving home. Today, her dream is a reality. Fueled by our unwavering commitment to everyone touched by breast and inflammatory breast cancer, we have poured our hearts into funding crucial research. This dedication has culminated in something extraordinary: Ohio's very first Inflammatory Breast Cancer Program at The James Cancer Hospital's Stefanie Spielman Comprehensive Breast Center! This is one of only a handful of such specialized centers in the entire nation. You, our incredible community, made this possible. Your compassion and generosity are directly fueling the fight against this devastating disease, bringing us closer to a future free from it. We are profoundly grateful for your partnership. Join us each August for our lively "Strikes Against Cancer: This is How We Roll" bowling event. Join me in raising funds for ALS research This past St. Patrick’s Day, we hit the 3-year milestone of Lori’s ALS diagnosis. Progression has been continuous, as expected with this dreadful disease. While there remains no cure, both primary doctors for Lori’s care (Dr. Stephen Kolb at The Ohio State University and Dr. Merit Cudkowicz at Massachusetts General Hospital) believe that there will be one day. It is their research efforts that have the potential. And it is targeted philanthropy that can directly accelerate progress. To those who donated last year: your donation allowed Dr. Kolb to map presymptomatic gene expression profiles in motor neurons in an animal model of motor neuron degeneration. Today, we kick off phase 2 of our efforts to support additional targeted research in Dr. Kolb’s lab. This new research is novel and potentially a game changer in the fight to stop ALS. In a recent sit down with Dr. Kolb at his lab, he shared a potentially breakthrough unfunded laboratory experiment using a unique piglet model of motor neuron degeneration. This work aims to identify gene expression changes in motor neurons <em>before</em> degeneration occurs, a critical but poorly understood phase of ALS. The experiment uses advanced spatial transcriptomics techniques (ie. measurement of expression levels of genes) to pinpoint early molecular signals that could become future therapeutic targets. A philanthropic contribution of at least <strong>$15,000</strong> would enable this experiment to move forward by generating essential preliminary data. These results would significantly strengthen future applications for larger NIH grants, helping sustain and expand ALS research during a period of uncertain federal funding. With your help, research could begin shortly after funds are received, with meaningful progress within 6 months and full results expected within a year. Nan was a beloved daughter, sister, wife, mother, Mimi, aunt, cousin, and friend. She devoted much of her life to the people she loved most, always putting family and friends at the center of her world and finding happiness in simply being together. Born May 2, 1943, in Zanesville, Ohio, to James and Adra (Hill) Watson, Nan grew up as the only girl with two older brothers, Danny and Bill. Perhaps growing up with two brothers had something to do with the spirited, feisty personality that would remain one of her defining characteristics throughout her life. Nan graduated from Philo High School in 1961 and later attended secretarial school in Columbus. She went on to work as a secretary in the Education Department at Arps Hall at The Ohio State University. It was also in Columbus that Nan met Jerry Grandstaff at a party at Ohio State, beginning a love story that would span more than 60 years. Together, Nan and Jerry built a life in Columbus, raised their two daughters, Julie and Jill, and created a home filled with family, friends, activities, laughter, and, of course, their beloved dog, Sam. Nan embraced being involved in her daughters' lives. She was an active PTA mom, room parent, and the kind of mother who showed up. She loved her daughters fiercely, celebrated their accomplishments, worried about them no matter how old they became, and remained an important part of their lives as they grew up and created families of their own. She gave them traditions, memories, laughter, a love of family, and more than a little of her feisty spirit. Nan also built a wonderful circle of friendships throughout her life. She was part of the Book Chats at Northern Lights Library, Ladies Bridge, Couples Bridge, and The Stitch Witches which later became the Tuesday Lunch Group. She and Jerry even became so close with members of the staff at their favorite restaurant, Champps, that they were invited to some of their servers' weddings. To Nan, people she cared about had a way of becoming part of her extended family. Becoming a grandmother brought Nan a special kind of happiness. To her grandchildren, she was Mimi, and she was one of their biggest cheerleaders. She loved watching them grow, celebrating their accomplishments, hearing about their lives, and creating memories they will carry with them forever. They will remember family beach vacations, lunches together at Max & Erma's, her unmistakable feisty personality, her laughter, and simply having Mimi there. Nan had a way of making people feel welcomed and cared about. She will be remembered for her kind heart, generosity, sense of humor and spunkiness. She had a love of movies of most any genre. Nan was a voracious reader and loved books. There is a bookshelf in almost every room in their home. She loved sharing those interests with the people around her, passing along a love of stories that continues in her family. Nan had an eye for style, she took pride in taking care of her flowers in the backyard, always making them look the best. She was always dressed to the nines and presented herself very well. She also cared very deeply about keeping her home warm and cozy and inviting for all those who visited. Christmas was a big part of her life from collecting ornaments on her vacations for family, finding the perfect Hallmark Ornament for each grandchild, watching Christmas in July Hallmark movies, and her Christmas Eve gatherings. She even hosted holiday parties for many years for Jerry’s work family. Nan also enjoyed traveling and was fortunate to visit many places throughout her life. One trip was particularly special: she finally made it to Britain, a place she had always dreamed of visiting. She is survived by her loving husband of more than 60 years, Jerry; her daughters, Julie (Stephen) and Jill (Bao); her grandchildren, Kirsten, Austin (Audrey), Brock, Braxton, and Brooke; her brother, Bill (Jackie); her nieces Jeanne, LeeAnne, and Jamie and their families; her cousins Ellen (she and Nan were born 10 days apart and were like sisters) and her family; and Bobby and his family; along with all the Hutchesons and Hazens; and the many members of the Grandstaff clan who were part of her life. She was preceded in death by her parents, James and Adra Watson; her beloved big brother, Danny (Sandra); her nephew, John; and the family's much-loved dog, Sam. Though our hearts are broken by Nan's passing, we are deeply grateful for the 83 years of life she lived, and for the memories, laughter, stories, traditions, and love she gave us along the way. Her place in our family cannot be filled, but neither can it be erased. She remains woven into the lives of her husband, daughters, grandchildren, family, and friends, and into all the stories we will continue to tell about her for years to come. Although they are Jerry’s caregivers, Elizabeth and Autumn hold a special place in Nan’s heart becoming more than friends to her. We want to thank all of them (including Deborah who came to visit her at the hospital) for the love, care and compassion they gave Nan.

Buckeye Tick Test is a public service that protects Ohio communities by identifying ticks and detecting the diseases they carry. As ticks continue to expand their range and transmit emerging pathogens, timely and accurate surveillance is essential for understanding risk and guiding public health response. Each tick submitted contributes to a growing statewide surveillance effort while providing hands‑on laboratory training for students who play a direct role in real‑world public health research. <strong>Public Health Impact</strong> <strong>Tick surveillance—the systematic collection and analysis of ticks—is critical to protecting public health, animal health, and agricultural systems.</strong> Ticks transmit diseases that affect <strong>people, pets, livestock, and wildlife</strong>, creating risks that extend beyond individual exposure and into veterinary care, food production, and ecosystem health. Every tick identified and tested adds to a statewide dataset that helps researchers and public health professionals understand where ticks are spreading and what diseases they carry. This work supports:<ul><li>Monitoring the spread of tick species across Ohio</li><li>Identifying disease‑causing pathogens earlier</li><li>Tracking changes in pathogen prevalence over time</li></ul><ul><li>Informing public health, veterinary, and agricultural outreach and prevention efforts</li></ul> To date, <strong>Buckeye Tick Test has processed more than 5,000 ticks</strong>, with <strong>nearly 800 testing positive for disease‑causing pathogens</strong>. In March 2006, just 10 days after Santino’s parents, Michael and Brooke Carnevale, discovered they were expecting a child, his father was diagnosed with adenoid cystic carcinoma — a rare head and neck cancer. In 2015, at only 9 years old, Santino made the decision to stand up and do something in the fight against cancer. At such a young age, he already possessed a desire to help others going through similar battles. Santino began by organizing a lemonade stand and bake sale. Santino intended to honor his father, as well as his grandfather, the late Franklin County Sheriff Jim Karnes, who passed away when Santino was 4 years old from pancreatic cancer. The first year of the lemonade stand, Santino’s efforts raised an astounding $5,000 and he has never looked back. Santino formed his initiative known as “Santino’s Crusade for a Cancer-Free World”. In addition to the annual lemonade stand and bake sale, Santino hosts an Ohio State Tailgate party in downtown West Jefferson, OH. His family, friends and classmates have joined him in his efforts. Santino is widely known throughout The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center – Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital and Richard J. Solove Research Institute (OSUCCC – James) as one of the youngest adolescents to establish a fund and is often referred to as “Santino, the Cancer Crusader". Santino created the Head and Neck Cancer Strategic Support Fund at the OSUCCC – James in his beloved father’s honor in 2015. Unfortunately, Michael succumbed to his long battle with cancer in the fall of 2016, but that hasn’t slowed Santino’s efforts in the least. Proceeds raised from Santino’s initiatives have exceeded over $268,000 for the Head and Neck Cancer Strategic Support Fund! In addition, Santino was the recipient of the 2018 Jefferson Award, to recognize individuals who do extraordinary things in their community without expecting anything in return. To date, Santino is the youngest person in history to receive the prestigious Jefferson Award. Santino also serves as a member of the James Ambassadors Society at the OSUCCC – James and is the youngest member inducted into the Society. Santino graduated from high school in 2025 as the valedictorian. Check back here for updates! <strong>Why Scholarships? </strong> The College of Veterinary Medicine holds an ambitious goal of eliminating a year of tuition for every student, meaning it will be providing a total of $8M a year in scholarship dollars. This next academic year, the college will distribute $4.8M in philanthropic support. This number has increased significantly from $340,000 awarded eight years ago.  Scholarships have become more important now than ever as two of three Ohio State veterinary students graduate with over $200,000 in student loan debt. Many of the students end up paying back double what they borrowed, which could end up being as much as $400,000. In-state tuition is around $64,000 for the first three years of veterinary school and about $89,000 for the fourth year due to an additional summer semester. With war and strife spreading out from the impacts of Gaza and Iran, it is timely to showcase, educate, and celebrate the rich cultural heritage and practices of a vibrant Middle East. The Middle East Studies Center is the hub for all things Middle East at Ohio State University. By “Middle East,” we mean the countries and regions of Southwest Asia, North Africa, and Türkiye (Turkey). Even as our faculty, students and next generation are not able to experience the Middle East in person, we seek to augment and uplift the cultural encounters and heritage experiences for students and all Buckeyes. We are raising $20,000 to bring in expert artists, academics doing fieldwork in the region, authors from the region, and others who will create experiences that bring the cultural context of the Middle East to a wide audience. We will be able to offer intercultural learning opportunities through the arts such as concerts, performances, movie screenings, hands-on workshops with Chefs and Master Calligraphers, staged readings, and the like.  Community members, help us amplify the rich artistic heritage and cultural practices of the Middle East. Your contribution will make it possible for our students and members of the local community to engage personally with special guests and to learn from our faculty about related histories, cultures, and places in the Middle East.  In the past we have commissioned plays, co-hosted international conferences, facilitated discussions with film makers, organized conversations with hip hop artists, co-sponsored Arabic calligraphy workshops.  Your funds will allow us to bring in prominent artists and experts and let them use their creative freedom to engage at the human level of the arts.  Goals: Increasing Visibility and Relevance Our Center brings together scholars from across the university to support public programs, language learning opportunities, and community conversations that highlight both everyday life and major events in the Middle East. We want to make these opportunities more visible to the local community by hosting prominent artists and scholars who will draw a crowd. We have an educational mission to make learning about the Middle East more accessible to our local community and that prioritizes youth. Visible activities build excitement and help us to form communities around topics of interest. Our goal is to serve these communities with more of the opportunities and resources they are seeking, and to fill those events so that we have the resources to sustain the activities. Images The main image is from "House of Flesh," a play the Middle East Studies Center produced in collaboration with members of the Department of Theatre in 2011. You will also see Master Calligrapher, Muhammad Habib's, Calligraphy on a chalkboard he created for the Calligraphy Workshop we co-host with Near Eastern and Saouth Asian Languages and Cultures (NESA), with support from the Center for Languages Literatures and Cultures. AMO prides itself on being the leading student organization for aviation and business students. Support African Youth League's cultural events, student programming, and community impact initiatives! <strong>African Youth League – Who We Are</strong> The African Youth League (AYL) is the oldest and largest African student organization at The Ohio State University, founded in 1994 with a mission to celebrate, share, and preserve African culture on campus. Over the past 30 years, we have built a lasting legacy through <strong>three annual signature events</strong> — <strong>African Night, Up-A-Bae, and the African Distinction Gala</strong> — as well as weekly General Body Meetings every Wednesday from 7–9 PM that consistently draw students from across the university. <strong>Why We're Fundraising</strong> Like many student organizations, AYL has been impacted by recent funding cuts that threaten our ability to deliver the programming our community depends on. This makes it difficult to host highly-anticipated events like African Night and puts a real strain on our executive board — a group of students already balancing AYL alongside demanding academic and personal responsibilities. Financial hardship makes it exceedingly difficult to deliver the high-quality experiences our community loves and deserves. Our three signature events draw remarkable attendance each year — African Night (1,000+), Up-A-Bae (500+), and the African Distinction Gala (200+) — but funding cuts have made it increasingly hard to accommodate audiences of that size while maintaining the quality they expect. Beyond the celebrations themselves, these events also serve a greater purpose: we use them as platforms for community service and to fundraise for causes directly impacting communities across Africa. What we do extends far beyond campus. Every dollar raised goes directly toward keeping our events, meetings, and initiatives running for the hundreds of students we serve — and toward the broader mission of giving back that has always been at the heart of AYL. Keith Watson DO spent a lifetime dedicated to medical education and advancing access to medical care in underserved populations. A single doctor arriving in a small town made his own life possible by diagnosing and treating his mother’s inability to conceive. This shaped his view of the world, as he saw firsthand how the presence of medical care can affect a whole community. Throughout his career as a cancer surgeon, medical educator and nationally-celebrated leader in the field of Osteopathic Medicine, Dr. Watson continued championing access to medical education and research, even as he transitioned from provider to patient. Dr. Watson fought a 19-year battle with Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia (CLL), trusting the expertise of Dr. Jennifer Woyach and her team at Ohio State to guide him through cutting edge treatments. A true cancer surgeon to the very end, he never waivered in his desire to try one more clinical trial. He understood deeply that each new clinical trial brought possibility, not only for his own health but for the countless others who could benefit from the continued work of this research. The family is thankful to Dr. Woyach and the CLL team at the James Cancer Center for their care and expertise, giving us the gift of time together. It is our hope that gifts given in Dr. Watson’s memory will continue advancing the research and care that will help so many others. Send a Men's Glee Club Member to the Intercollegiate Musical Council at Harvard in February <strong>The Men’s Glee Club has been invited to perform at the 2027 National IMC: The Tenor-Bass Choral Consortium</strong>. Since its founding in 1915 as the Intercollegiate Musical Council, IMC: The Tenor-Bass Choral Consortium has striven to promote quality tenor-bass chorus singing and music. Its membership is made up of tenor-bass choruses/glee clubs of the nation’s universities, college and secondary schools. Membership is also open to community and professional ensembles, as well as to individuals. <strong>The 2027 conference (February 25–27) will be held on the campus of Harvard University. The Men's Glee Club will be featured on the closing concert — Feb. 27 at 7:30 p.m.</strong> The projected cost for this trip is $36,000. The bulk of this cost is for transportation and food for the singers and conductors. Expenses have been kept to a minimum due to the generosity of members of the Harvard Glee Club who have offered to house the Ohio State singers for the duration of their stay in Cambridge. Approximate cost per singer for this trip is $550. The School of Music will make a contribution, and we will apply funds from current endowment funds, though these funds are currently somewhat depleted due to our recent Sesquicentennial (150th) celebration in 2025–2026. <strong>REQUEST</strong>:  Please consider a donation to help a Men's Glee Club member get to Harvard — much like trips our alumni remember from years past to Washington D.C., New York, Chicago and beyond. Help CSEEES students continue their education and complete their degree. Ohio State’s Center for Slavic, East European and Eurasian Studies (CSEEES) has a long history of excellence in the field, producing graduates with foreign language skills and cultural knowledge to succeed in business, education and government work. Our quality has been recognized by consistently being awarded National Resource Center and Foreign Language and Area Studies grants from the U.S. Department of Education (ED), which allowed our top students to receive fellowships for their studies. <strong>Those programs were cancelled last year</strong>, and both students and staff scrambled to bridge the gaps. We are excited that a new grant program from ED was announced, called Centers Aligned with Areas for National Need (CAANN), and we’ve applied in the hope of receiving federal support for and recognition of our work; an announcement is expected in mid-September. Regardless of the outcome, <strong>CAANN would provide a smaller portion of funds for student support</strong>. We are determined to continue to fill the gaps in their finances to the best of our ability. <em>"My time with CSEEES was instrumental in developing me personally and professionally into the person that I am today…the CSEEES M.A. creates professionals with a cross functional skill set that would be useful in almost any industry."-- CSEEES Survey Respondent</em> Your past generosity allowed us to establish the <a href="https://slaviccenter.osu.edu/funding/cseees-excellence-award">CSEEES Excellence Award</a> which starting in autumn 2026 will provide a scholarship to CSEEES students who earn a GPA of 3.9 or higher. Four students have earned the award this fall, with six eligible for it in spring. You will meet some of these students throughout the course of this campaign and learn about their interests and goals. Amazingly, this fall’s Excellence Awardees collectively study eight languages: Albanian, Bosnian-Croatian-Serbian, Hebrew, Romanian, Russian, Turkish, Polish and Yiddish. <strong>Your gift to this campaign supports these students, allowing them to continue their education and complete their degree.</strong> <strong>Our goal is to raise $6,000 to increase the fall Excellence Award to at least $1,000 per student</strong>, ensure we have enough funds to keep our promise to all students who qualify in spring, and continue to offer professional development grants to students along with a well-rounded campus experience of lectures, workshops, film screenings and events. <strong><em>The first $1,500 of donations of $100 or more were matched by funds from our Director, a generous alum and friends of the Center, helping us make quick progress towards our goal. </em></strong> Donations of any size help us reach our goal, and show our students your support. <strong>Every $600 raised over the goal allows us to promise an additional $100 for Excellence Award recipients this spring.</strong>

The next year, we turned it into a charity event to support a friend in need. Over time, we named it “Friends helping Friends” because that is exactly what friends do when someone needs help. We began by raising funds to support ALD (Adrenoleukodystrophy), diabetes, and cancer research. Since then, many family members, friends, and colleagues have faced serious illnesses, and sadly, we have lost several far too soon. <strong>With the support of so many generous people, we have raised and donated more than $283,000.</strong> Most of us know someone who is fighting a disease or has been directly affected by one. It will take all of us working together to win these battles, and we could not have made this impact without the support of our family, friends, and colleagues. There are so many worthy causes, and we are grateful for everyone who gives their time, energy, and resources to make a difference. Medical progress is possible because of that generosity. Jodi and I will continue doing our part until cures are found and more people can live healthier, better lives. This year, we are asking that donations be made to The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center – Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital and Richard J. Growing up in a tight-knit family with her mom being the sole provider, she knew she wanted to stay in state for school. She decided on Ohio State after being chosen as part of the inaugural cohort of the Scarlet and Gray Advantage program, which fully supports all expenses and helped her graduate completely debt-free. By the spring of her freshman year, she began to work 20 hours a week at the financial aid office on campus and continued throughout all four years. She finds it rewarding to help other first-year and first-generation students with no clue where to start, just like she was when she first came here. Her favorite Ohio State memory is getting more involved with her department and meeting one of her best friends in an archeology class. She says the best class she took was The Living Primates, since it allowed her to explore a different side of anthropology. Katalina also enjoyed participating in Ohio State’s Wigs for Kids, which helps children with medical-related hair loss. In June 2026, Katalina started her full-time counselor position at BuckeyeLink and is excited to further her time with the university. She would love to eventually work in a museum with a curation job. She likes the human-side of archaeology, where she has the creativity to put together items and tell a story. She plans to work for a few years before coming back to earn a master’s degree and a doctorate. <strong>Shayla Frederick</strong><strong></strong> <strong>“I wish I could go back to freshman year and experience all the firsts as an Ohio State student. First football game, first time in the dining halls, first everything! This campus and community has already given me so much, it’s impossible to find one specific memory from my four years here. But what matters more to me is the people who made these memories so valuable, and I’ll cherish those forever.”</strong> <strong>HOMETOWN:</strong> Dayton, Ohio<strong>CAMPUS:</strong> Columbus<strong>MAJOR:</strong> BS in Industrial and Systems Engineering, minor in humanitarian engineering<strong>YEAR:</strong> Class of 2026 Shayla accepted her admission immediately and became part of the Humanitarian Engineering Scholars, a two-year program designed to teach students how to utilize engineering for social good. She got involved with the engineering sorority Phi Sigma Rho, holding positions from recruitment guide to vice president of new member education. She loved holding mentor positions with the sorority because it allowed her to think back to when she first came to campus and guide girls through the process. She particularly enjoyed taking Intro to Skydiving, where she says she didn’t expect to learn so much about fear and control, but the dive made her think about those aspects of her identity. Shayla held internships with Coca-Cola and GE Aerospace and served as a teaching assistant for the College of Engineering. She also spent considerable time on her capstone, working with solar panel manufacturer Illuminate, allowing her to implement data analysis (including Measurement System Analysis, Monte Carlo Simulations, other Lean Six Sigma tools) and continuous improvement strategies. She even got to lead a Kaizen workshop with 10 operators, allowing her to use the skills learned in her industrial engineering major, and take it to the next level while talking to stakeholders and convincing them of her solutions. Shayla graduated in spring 2026 and began an Operations Management Leadership Program at GE Aerospace in fall 2026. Over the course of two years, Shayla will get to participate in three roles, ranging from quality to people leadership. She is excited to explore different roles in the company while also traveling. She is thankful for donors that give to Ohio State, emphasizing that “our stories are all different, but we continue to be linked in the gratitude we have for everyone involved in our journeys. There are no words or actions that can encompass the impact you have made on many lives.”

Help make collegiate figure skating more accessible and give OSUFSC skaters the opportunity to compete, grow, and chase their goals. The Ohio State University Figure Skating Club (OSUFSC), established in 1997, acts as The Ohio State University’s only competitive figure skating team. The club itself is made up of two groups: recreational (those who skate leisurely once a week on club ice) and competitive (those who train and meet required practice hours to perform during competitions). OSUFSC competes within the southeastern region, and members of the competitive team have the opportunity to skate in three fixed competitions annually, with the addition of one national competition at the end of the season — granted that OSUFSC places in the top four spots of the region to compete at nationals. This year, the club will compete at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio (Feb. 5-7), University of South Florida (Feb. 26-28), and University of Maryland (March 5-7). Over the span of the weekend, skaters stay in hotels, and wake up early to support each of their teammates throughout the day. Last year, against 27 South Eastern collegiate teams, OUSFSC placed 5th overall, one position off from earning a spot at nationals.  Supporting OSUFSC goes beyond potential national placements; your support invests in the livelihood of individuals within the team. Any donation made to the team lessens the financial strain figure skating levies on collegiate athletes, and raises club participation by increasing accessibility to the sport. Every year competitive skaters pay out of pocket for competition fees, meals, and travel costs, as well as yearly ice time, their dresses, skate sharpenings, and coaching lessons. Your support can help decrease the amount that skaters pay to compete through OSUFSC, and in turn help more skaters continue to skate through college at OSU. Make a gift in memory of Minnie to help other animals at The Ohio State University Veterinary Medical Center obtain the care they need. <p><span class="fr-deletable">[[Amount Raised]]</span> raised from <span class="fr-deletable">[[Gifts Received]]</span> gifts</p> <em>To know Minnie was to know love. </em><em>It was impossible to look at Minnie and not feel like you have met one of the most beautiful souls to ever walk the earth. </em> This fund is set up in memory of Minnie to help assist other cats at The Ohio State University Veterinary Medical Center obtain the care they need when this cannot be afforded financially. Finances are not a reason someone should have to go without treatment.  Minnie was a true earth angel and now my heavenly angel. Born a feral farm cat and learning how to survive thanks to her mom. One day when she was around 6 months old, she decided she wanted something more out of life. Avoiding all human contact, one cold winter day she walked right up to me, looked up and wanted to be held. A friendship that would never be broken began that day. Every day was a good day for Minnie and she lived life to the fullest. She’d go anywhere with me including work and church. There weren't too many places I went to that didn’t know who Minnie was. She loved every moment she’d get to know someone new. She gave the best Eskimo kisses and someone being so small took up the biggest room in my heart. Despite having an immense amount of love for my precious girl, the universe had other plans. She was diagnosed with chronic kidney disease at just 6 years old. Minnie was light and love and sunshine and everything that is good about this world. Thanks to treatment at Ohio State, I was able to spend two more years with my best friend. When I say best friend, I mean it and Minnie was everyone’s best friend. There wasn’t a person she didn’t like. She brought so much love into this universe, that it only seems right that good continues to come from her even after her passing. Thankfully Minnie had the perfect personality to work extensively with multiple doctors and face whatever treatment came her way with strength and a fearless attitude. I knew giving up on her wasn’t an option. She touched the lives of every tech, doctor and staff member she met. Somehow having her presence in the room made the worst situations always seem better. She was so brave for every battle she faced. As a pet parent, any of us could be faced with having to make decisions that will impact our pets’ lives. If your furry family member is ever sick, the last thing you would ever want to do is say no to treatment due to finances. No pet deserves to have the quality of their life be diminished or lose their life because care is simply not affordable. No matter how long we get to love them, it’s never long enough; therefore, let’s not allow anything to reduce a time that is already short enough. This fund will help so nobody ever has to say no. No matter what size of gift you are able to give, it will make a difference, it will save a life, it will help keep someone’s best friend here a little longer. Let’s keep the rainbow bridge at bay by saying I’ve got your back; I will help you through this. Minnie helped so many, now it’s our turn to keep her legend going. She may have been Minnie, but she was mighty. It’s time to live without bounds just as she did. You may be saying to yourself there’s so many pets out there who need help, that this won’t make a difference, but I tell you with absolute certainly, that the pet who gets to walk out the door with its owner and not be carried out in a small box, that’s where the difference will be. Even if it’s it’s just one pet saved, that’s one who didn’t die too young.

Support academic and outreach activities that promote African Studies Established by the Center for African Studies, the Renaissance Fund augments the Center’s vitality. Income will be allocated by the Director of the Center for African Studies to support academic and outreach activities that promote African Studies on and off campus and that enhance the interest, knowledge, and discourse on African-related topics in the academic communities and the public. Until the contributions to the fund reach the endowment level, the fund shall function as a current-use fund.
