Canter's Cave 4-H Camp was established in 1949 and has a long-standing tradition in offering quality residential camping opportunities for our 4-H'ers as well as being a retreat facility in Southern Ohio. Canter’s Cave serves 10 counties for their summer residential camps as well as hosting multiple regional and statewide events. In a traditional year, more than 2,000 4-H’ers take part in our camping program. Many outside groups use the facility throughout the year for family reunions, weddings, retreats and more! In the summer, our sleeping facilities can accommodate up to 300 people and 160 in the winter.
In 2019, we were the recipients of a Youth Development Grant from the Southern Ohio Agricultural and Community Development Foundation that allowed us to construct a new lodging and meeting facility at the base of the boys' hill. This building also provides restrooms closer to the boys' cabins. Additionally, through this grant and our ongoing fundraising efforts, we have updated the HVAC system in Harrison Powell Lodge.
Each year the majority of our operating budget comes from user fees, but it is important to note that we strive to keep fees as low as possible so that as many youth as possible can afford to attend camp. As a result, we operate on a very tight budget. When unexpected costs, facility improvements and major renovations are needed, we rely heavily on contributions from the community to subsidize the camp's needs.
As a result of COVID-19, and the restrictions that have been put in place, Ohio 4-H has made the very difficult decision to suspend 4-H camps this summer. 4-H'ers will not be allowed to camp until after August 31st, and many of our outside rental groups have had to cancel as well. While we are saddened by this news, we fully support the decision to keep our youth safe. However, this decision comes the difficult situation of keeping the camp running while our yearly income has been greatly reduced.
Now more than ever, Canter's Cave 4-H Camp needs your help until we can welcome our youth back in the summer of 2021. Funds raised through this platform will be used to finalize the expenses of our new facility and to meet the necessary operating expenses. Your donations will help us continue to make the best better for years to come!
