Cancer Messed With the Wrong Family

Geib women are known for many amazing things: they are leaders, they are fun loving, Buckeye super fans, they are rarely seen without lipstick or some form of sparkle, they are fighters, changemakers and so much more. Probably the least interesting thing about them is the cancer that both Sandie and Tori Geib have faced in their lifetime (along with other family members along the way). However, as with anything, Geib women are determined to be changemakers - and cancer messed with the wrong family. 

In March of 2016, Tori was diagnosed with Metastatic (Stage 4) Breast Cancer at the age of 30 that had spread to her bones, lungs, liver and would eventually also spread to her brain. Just over two years later in 2018, Sandie was diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma, that would eventually progress to Stage 3, the most advanced stage of her disease. Tori and Sandie always had a special bond as Aunt and Niece - with a strong will to fight and love for their family taught to them by Virginia Mae Geib, Sandie's Mother in Law and Tori's Grandmother during her own fight with cancer years earlier. Sandie and Tori's shared crucible with cancer set them both into action and advocacy. Tori began to advocate under the brand Metastatic Millennial with a goal to see her 35th birthday (5 years after her diagnosis) and beyond. When she was approached with the idea of starting a research fund at The James Cancer Hospital and Solove Research Institute, it was crucial to her to make sure her Aunt Sandie was included - and her cancer along with Tori's got the necessary research dollars to push for advancements to keep Geib women sparkling for years to come. 

Tragically, on February 24, 2021 - Sandie passed away after a 3 year battle with the disease. There is one thing we know - Sandie, Tori, nor any other cancer patient fails their treatments - it is science that has failed them - more specifically the lack of life saving research being done on these most deadly forms of the disease. It is estimated that less than 7% of all Breast Cancer Research dollars go to fund curative metastatic research and even less yet to Advanced Multiple Myeloma Research.

Advanced Multiple Myeloma has a median prognosis of 29 months and Metastatic Breast Cancer isn't far behind, with a median prognosis of 36 months. It is estimated in 2021, 56,540 Americans will die from these advanced and lethal forms of cancer (ACS, Statistics). The only thing that will continue to save lives is new research that will extend the lives of those facing Advanced Multiple Myeloma and Metastatic Breast Cancer. Imagine a day when no tears will be shed with a cancer diagnosis, because all will be survivors, and no one will be at risk of dying of their disease. It is a dream we hold close - a dream that one day no more of the Geib's, or any other family, will endure a terminal cancer diagnosis.
