Hello all,
All of us here offer our sincere gratitude for your support so far in this project.
This week we are pleased to announce our project for this year.
Sepsis is a life threatening complication that occurs during an infection, with about 1.5 million cases each year in the US alone with at least 250,000 Americans dying from sepsis each year. There are four common types of infections that are linked to sepsis, which are infections of the lungs, urinary tract, skin, and gut.
The current treatment for sepsis is antibiotics, which is not ideal due to the lysing of the bacteria which leads to the release of the Lipid A endotoxin. Our goal is to create a novel therapy to treat sepsis in a way that avoids the massive release of Lipid A to avoid a cytokine storm.
Our project centers on a bacteriophage, a type of virus, that can infect and kill bacteria. With that, we plan to have the virus insert genes into the bacteria that facilitate the breakdown of Lipid A, preventing a reaction with the immune system that causes sepsis.
We’re hoping for promising results and are excited for this season!
Please continue to support us by sharing with your family and friends!
Thank you,

Hello all,
All of us here are extremely thankful for your generosity and the opportunity we are being provided. We will be gaining important research and outreach experiences that further our development as scientists and leaders.
We are pleased to announce that our iGEM team is officially registered for this year’s competition and attended the annual kick-off virtually over the weekend from 5/16-5/17. More than 300 teams from around the globe joined to share their stories and wish each other a successful season. We can’t wait to see what this year brings!
In addition, we have decided on this year’s project. The idea is to develop a phage-based therapy for sepsis. More details will come in the following weeks!
If you are interested and would like to help out more, we would be grateful if you could help spread our message by passing this site’s link to your own family and friends.
Hope you’re enjoying the pleasant weather!
