My name is Shayna Kling and I am a senior studying psychology with minors in business and Spanish, from Cincinnati, Ohio. Outside of the classroom, I am involved in many organizations that have shaped my Ohio State experience. As a university ambassador (tour guide), I proudly walk backwards as I show prospective members around our campus. I am also passionate about my involvement within the Jewish community, as I am a member of the MeshugaNotes a cappella choir and an executive board member at Hillel. I am a Mortar Board member, which is a prestigious society for seniors and a sister of the Alpha Chi Omega sorority. I am grateful for the growth that these organizations have provided for me over the past three years. I have also been a high-energy camper and counselor at Camp Wise for the past 12 summers and am a paid soloist at my synagogue in Cincinnati.
I am honored to be a member of the 2022 Ohio State Homecoming Court and to be surrounded by such passionate and successful individuals. Throughout my education as a psychology major, I have learned the power of connecting with others and have embraced this connection during my time at Ohio State. My love for Spanish has also grown at Ohio State and I have always wanted to expand my Spanish learning outside of the classroom. This past semester, through the Office of Global Education, I had the opportunity to study abroad in Sevilla, Spain. I lived with a host family; assistant taught English; visited many countries in Europe, as well as Morocco in Africa; and learned how to adjust and build a community across the world. Through the combination of the Second-Year Transformational Experience Program (STEP) and Ohio State scholarships, I was able to have this experience, and I am forever grateful.
My time in Spain sparked my desire to return abroad. Because of this, I am looking into post-graduate programs that will allow me to teach English abroad, or possibly teaching programs located in underprivileged areas of the United States, to give myself time for growth and exploration before graduate school. This passion for studying abroad and gratitude for the experience I had are why I am focusing on The Ohio State Fund for Study Abroad, which provides student grants to assist in covering costs associated with studying abroad and other discretionary program needs.
I believe that every student should have the opportunity to study abroad, despite financial challenges. I came back to Ohio State with a changed mentality, an expanded world mindset, and a desire to explore more of what the world has to offer while impacting my community along the way. I want future students to have these types of experiences without worrying how they will afford the costs. We learn so much during our time at Ohio State, but it is also extremely important to take a step (or very large leap) outside of Columbus to continue growing and expanding our mentalities. Thank you in advance for considering a donation to this fund and for supporting the growth of future students. Go Buckeyes!
