Hello there! My name is Erin Cowen and I am a fourth year honors student in biomedical engineering with minors in business and computer information science. I am from Hilliard, OH and I was lucky enough to find a home at Ohio State. That was largely due to the incredible support structures that have been put in place by the College of Engineering Office of Diversity, Outreach and Inclusion (DOI).
The DOI not only supports current Ohio State engineering students, but also reaches out to younger generations to get them excited about STEM. In high school, I had the opportunity to attend summer camps that were put on by the DOI. These camps really ignited my passion for engineering and gave me the confidence to pursue this challenging path. It was also awesome to run into some of my fellow campers and counselors on campus once I became a student myself. Those outreach camps were what drew me to engineering and to Ohio State.
As a student, the DOI has been instrumental in ensuring my success. They offer tutoring, study tables, and they house a number of student organizations that are incredibly beneficial to student success. I am personally involved with the Society of Women Engineers, having been an active member throughout my time at Ohio State and elected as an officer for the past three years. It has been such a privilege to serve as a leader for this student organization that has given me so much, from career opportunities, to scholarships, to some of my best friends. Other student organizations, like the National Society of Black Engineers and the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers, are also fantastic places for young engineers to find a supportive community.
The work of the DOI is truly important, not just for our current students, but also for our alumni and the next generation of Buckeye engineers. They take their mission of advancing inclusive excellence very seriously and I do not think I would be where I am today without their support. Our world needs a dynamic workforce of problem solvers and the DOI is working to ensure that Ohio State produces the best. Please consider giving.
