My name is Jacob Chang and I am a senior on track for a dual degree in Psychology and Political Science specializing in Inequality and Justice from Nanjing, Jiangsu, China. Throughout my time here, I served as the student body president of Ohio State from –2021-2022, chair of the International Student Council, and vice president of Chinese Students and Scholars Society. I was also a member of the 115th Class of SPHINX Senior Honorary, a research assistant at the Drug Enforcement and Policy Center, and an orientation leader. My experiences gave me the strength to build my own community and celebrate my identity as an international and first-generation student, while developing my passion to advocate for marginalized communities through legal means. After graduation, I hope to attend law school and become a practicing civil rights attorney in the United States.

I first came to Ohio State and the United States four years ago to attend college. My journey to the United States was not easy. I came here with three suitcases and spent my first night sleeping at the Dallas airport after a 14-hour flight. And that is just one example of the unique challenges faced by international students. Coming to a different country for education is a rewarding experience in nature, but international students face cultural, social, and financial barriers that prevent them from fully utilizing opportunities provided to them in higher education. You can read more about it here.

The Office of International Affairs at Ohio State (OIA) offers various engagement opportunities that help international students to overcome these barriers from the moment they arrive in the United States. Resources offered by OIA help students like me to find our communities, build up our strength, and succeed. I encourage you to donate to boost the International Student Support Fund, which is housed in the Office of International Students and Scholars at OIA and supports scholarships, emergency funding, and supports programs, as well as other needs related to international students at Ohio State.
