Hi everyone, my name is Jordan Harkins and I’m raising money for The Ohio State University Global Water Institute’s Tanzania Initiative Fund.
I’ve loved the water ever since I can remember. I started swimming for my local summer league when I was 6 years old and joined the year-round club team at 7. I swam all throughout high school and am the current president of the Club Swim Team at Ohio State.
Too often, we take things for granted that other people are in a constant struggle for. For the past three years, I’ve had the luxury of practicing and competing in the McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion. While this facility holds nearly 1.56 million gallons of water at any given time, nearly one in two residents in Tanzania lack access to clean water — roughly 27 million people.
Ohio State’s Global Water Institute (GWI) has formed the Water for Rural Development model (W4RD), which has been implemented in two pilot villages. This has resulted in school attendance increasing as well as the percentage of people reporting severe food insecurity decreasing from 86% to 7%.
GWI’s vision is an inspirational one that I believe deserves more attention so it can continue its work. I thank you in advance for your support of GWI’s initiative to provide sustainable, clean water to the people of Tanzania. As always, Go Bucks!
