Buckeyes in Law: Moritz DC Summer Program 2023

Since 2003, each summer, the Michael E. Moritz College of Law has offered an amazing opportunity for Ohio State law students to study and work in Washington, DC. The Moritz DC Summer Program annually places about twenty law students in summer internships in DC—usually in unpaid internships and most often at federal agencies, on the Hill, and at non-profits, for which the students earn three course credits. As part of the summer program, Professor Steve Huefner teaches a course entitled the Ethics of Washington Lawyering, for which participating students earn an additional 2 course credits. The students also write a final term paper based on a substantive legal topic related to their internship, and they meet with dozens of prominent lawyers in DC, including agency general counsels, White House lawyers, members of Congress, federal judges and top-flight public interest litigators, to provide just a few examples. For more information on the Moritz DC Summer Program, check out the program website here

The Moritz DC Summer Program attracts some of our sharpest students, including many who are interested in careers in government and public service. Including this summer, close to 400 Ohio State law students will have participated in the program. These students make a substantial investment to participate in the program, including tuition and fees in the amount of roughly $8,500 for Ohio residents and $11,000 for nonresidents, not including living expenses.

To make the Moritz DC Summer Program more accessible to the full range of our JD students, and to help provide more financial flexibility for students in the program to pursue public-interest employment opportunities after graduation, we are launching our third annual Buckeye Funder campaign to encourage alums, supporters and friends of Ohio State to invest in our amazing students. Our goal is to raise $10,000 in scholarships through this initiative, which will be divided equally among the students enrolled in the 2023 Moritz DC Summer Program.
