My name is Sara Alsammerai and I am a senior pursuing a degree in Biology on the pre-medicine path. I have double minors in Chemistry and Nonprofit Management. Growing up in the community of Dublin, Ohio State has always felt like another home to me.

Throughout my time at the university, I have had the privilege of serving and bringing light to causes that are close to my heritage and community. Amongst these include the Biological Sciences Scholars, the Palestine Children's Relief Fund and research within the Ramaswamy Lab at The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center – Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital and Richard J. Solove Research Institute (OSUCCC – James). Most notably, I have served on the BuckeyeThon Executive Board as the Chief of Staff, and I currently serve as the Vice President of Advancement.

As an aspiring physician, BuckeyeThon has strengthened my commitment and passion to helping others. In particular, my endeavors have contributed to my vision of becoming a Pediatric Oncologist. In the past two years, I have fundraised over $5,000 for those battling pediatric cancer and blood disorders at Nationwide Children's Hospital (NCH). For every $1,000 I raised, I reached Miracle Maker status. The Miracle Makers of BuckeyeThon see the direct impact they have on the hospital with continued funding for research, programs and services, and cures aiding each kid at NCH.

I have volunteered and shadowed in the Hematology, Oncology and Blood & Marrow Transplant Unit of NCH, where I grew to understand the unique challenges families face as their children receive a disheartening diagnosis. My involvement in cancer research has developed as I pioneered my own project in the Ramaswamy Lab on cancer. To further focus on the social disparities and history of cancer in the context of helping modern innovation come to fruition is a goal I hope to carry out throughout my time as a physician.

Today, I continue to fundraise, advocate and research. Through BuckeyeThon, the Hematology, Oncology and Blood & Marrow Transplant Unit at NCH has helped children heal the creation of their future as Buckeyes. Together, we can continue to help the kids at NCH. I encourage you to make a gift so that no child has to hear the words: "You have cancer."
