Hello! My name is Julia Frey, and I am a senior majoring in Neuroscience from Elmhurst, Illinois. On campus, I am involved as a student research assistant at the Institute for Behavioral Medicine Research, STEM Exploration and Engagement Scholar, Neuroscience Ambassador and a Nu Rho Psi (The National Honor Society in Neuroscience) member. My leadership skills continued to grow through my time serving as Vice President of Operations for Tri Delta Sorority and a Recruitment Guide for Ohio State’s Panhellenic Association. After graduation, I plan to take a gap year and later pursue a career in medicine.
Cancer has impacted my life with three cancer diagnoses between my parents and losing my grandmother to the disease. During these times, I had a front row seat to cancer and its treatment. I saw the intersection of patient care and research when debating statistics and probabilities of recurrence and learned the importance of comprehensive patient education.
I also served as a caregiver for my grandmother during her time in hospice which opened my eyes to emotional and spiritual resources. These formative moments have inspired me to pursue the study of medicine and support the JamesCare for Life Fund.
The JamesCare for Life Fund has a variety of support programs available to individuals with cancer from the day they are diagnosed. These programs range from nutrition, support groups, family resources and caregiver support. Although I am not originally from Ohio and my family didn’t personally benefit from these resources, similar programs were made available to us and were invaluable during our time of need. I am grateful to use my platform to highlight the amazing work done by this program. Learn more about the incredible JamesCare for Life Program here.
It is my honor to serve on the 2023 Ohio State Homecoming Court and give back to the amazing university and community that has made me who I am today! Thank you for reading my story and for your support!
