My name is Anvitha Gogineni, and I am majoring in Neuroscience with a minor in Integrative Approaches to Health and Wellness. Throughout my time at Ohio State, I have gotten involved in several organizations which truly speak to my passions and interests. I hope to use the various experiences I have received through Ohio State to guide me as I pursue a medical degree in the future.
Being a woman in STEM, I understood the challenges this field entails for many like me early on in my college journey. Often, several students whose family has come from a background in academia can guide and connect them with opportunities which first-generation students don’t have access to. As the daughter of immigrant parents with no connections to the medical field, I understood the challenges of navigating the STEM pathway first-hand. I started conducting research with The Ohio State College of Medicine where I study first-generation student barriers to getting into medical school. While conducting this research and interviewing first-generation students, I was able to understand the diverse and large ranges of barriers first-generation students face, especially in terms of pursuing STEM degrees. While conducting this research, I also became involved with the Be W.I.S.E Initiative, a non-profit which advocates for women in STEM and STEM exposure to underserved children early on in their education. As a volunteer and outreach coordinator for this non-profit, I was able to further advocate for this cause that I am passionate towards – providing guidance and resources to first-generation students pursuing STEM careers.
Because of my passion for this topic, I have chosen to fundraise for the Dr. Steven Wegert Scholarship Fund for First Generation STEM Students.
