My name is Ayush Mehra and I am a senior on track for a degree in Nutritional Sciences with minors in Business Administration and Neuroscience. Throughout my time here, I have served as the Co-Founder and Co-President of Buckeyes Racial/ethnic Equity Awareness Centered in Healthcare (BREACH), assistant director for Community Outreach and Engagement for BuckeyeThon and Co-Founder and Co-President of Heart for the Unhoused at Ohio State. I have also served as a research assistant at the Multidisciplinary Opportunities for Movement Education and Science Lab and have had a focus on nutrition, rehabilitation, brain activity and underrepresented populations. My experiences have allowed me to further develop a passion for helping marginalized communities through medicine. After graduation, I hope to attend medical school and become a physician at a large urban academic center.

The challenges of beginning a life in an unfamiliar country run rampant for many years for an immigrant. My dad was a prime example of this. Sure, he graduated with a college degree, but that diploma does not describe that it took nine years to complete and allowed for one meal a day. While I never lived his experiences, I could feel their effects on the way we lived. It was difficult for him and impacted how I view the opportunities I receive.

Hearing my dad's experiences drove me towards serving the unhoused population. Through Heart for the Unhoused at Ohio State, my team and I have served hundreds of unhoused individuals within Central Ohio. We began working with multiple organizations by driving to the unhoused camp every Saturday and donating sweaters, hats, scarves and other items such as toothbrushes and hand warmers. Now our focus has shifted to our mobile screening clinic, which encompasses medical, dental and optometry screenings. Ultimately, our goal is to provide comprehensive care so the unhoused can find themselves in mainstream society again. I encourage you to make a gift to Heart for the Unhoused at Ohio State so we can achieve this goal and limit the number of unhoused individuals in our community. Everyone deserves a roof above their heads, and I am here to push that initiative with supporters like you.
