Hello! My name is Simran Surana and I am a fourth year studying Neuroscience on the pre-medical track. If you told me freshman year that I would have a minor in Society and Environmental Issues, I would have been surprised. Environmental studies was never something I considered. Before coming to Ohio State, I knew I wanted to go into healthcare, but was ignorant towards all the social issues and subjects I would be exposed to. Fast forward 3 years later and I hope to bridge my passions for medicine with the environment and sustainability.

Throughout my time at Ohio State, I have served as Deputy Director of Sustainable Dining through the Sustainability Committee of Undergraduate Student Government (USG), secretary of Food Recovery Network and president of Student Philanthropy Council from 2022-2023. I also am a CRIS Community Mentor, a research assistant at The James Comprehensive Cancer Clinic and volunteer at Nationwide Children’s Hospital. I am so thankful for these experiences and the support and resources at Ohio State that have shown me what service and advocacy can be. I joined Food Recovery Network and USG during the peak of COVID my first year, eager to gain volunteer hours and any experience within the virtual limits of a pandemic. I quickly realized how important issues like food security and access, as well as climate change were to me, even though I had little knowledge about them. From then on, I was able to work with the university’s Zero Waste program, put on educational events and create the Sustainability Farmer’s Market which invites students to learn about local businesses and environmental organizations. The topic of climate change can be daunting, but there are a number of resources at Ohio State that makes learning accessible for everyone.

One of the greatest resources to our knowledge of climate change is the Byrd Polar and Climate Research Center. The center conducts world-class research in Environmental Geochemistry, Glacier Dynamics and more. Unfortunately, Byrd Polar is experiencing costly damages to the freezers that contain ice cores and they are in dire need of updates so that the ice cores do not melt. I encourage you to donate to Byrd Polar so that the center can continue to progress our understanding of climate change and help find solutions to the ever-growing issues climate change creates. If you would like to learn more, check out Byrd Polar's website and consider watching Canary, a new film about the extraordinary work of Byrd Polar’s own Dr. Lonnie Thompson as he travels to remote glaciers to unearth climate history. The film is now in theaters nationwide. Take a look at the official trailer!

Thank you for taking the time to hear about my passions and Byrd Polar! If you have any questions, please reach out to me at surana.19@osu.edu.
