Hello! My name is Madeline Chamberlain, and I am a senior majoring in Neuroscience on the pre-medical track from Upper Arlington, Ohio. Throughout my time at Ohio State, I have been fortunate to be involved in a variety of different organizations. I have served on the leadership council of my scholars program, Health Sciences Scholars, for three years. Through the student organization, VAW Global Health Alliances, I had the opportunity to lead a group of students to Peru for a medical internship and serve as president of the organization. I am a founding executive member of the student organization, Friendship Circle, and have served as treasurer for the past two years. I am also a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma, and a volunteer at Riverside Methodist Hospital. These experiences have shaped my time during my undergraduate career and given me opportunities I never thought would be possible.
I am raising funds for the College of Medicine’s Department of Microbial Infection & Immunity, which is home to an amazing group of scientists who are advancing the fields of immunology and microbial pathogenesis. Their hard work leads to discoveries that translate into practical therapies that benefit society, helping to combat infections such as foodborne illnesses, the flu and COVID-19. They also contribute to groundbreaking research aimed at better understanding the immune system to develop treatments for diseases like cancer and neurodegeneration.
This cause is personal to me, as I have had the incredible opportunity to work in one of the department’s labs amongst a team of intelligent and inspiring women. I have been able to lead experiments, present my research, recruit and help train new students and have the privilege of being a co-author on a published paper. This experience has been transformative, allowing me to contribute to impactful research and learn from outstanding leaders in the field. My mentors, Dr. Stephanie Seveau and Isabella Prislusky, have been incredibly influential in my journey, not just as teachers, but as sources of constant support and inspiration. I am incredibly grateful for the entire lab’s encouragement and guidance over the past three years. The Department of Microbial Infection and Immunity has opened my eyes to the world of immunology and how our research efforts are translated into improved treatments for patients. Working in Dr. Seveau’s lab has pushed me to grow as a learner and researcher more than I ever thought possible, allowing me to realize how research directly impacts patients battling disease.
I am excited to raise funds for the College of Medicine’s Department of Microbial Infection & Immunity, a department that has had the most profound impact on my undergraduate experience. Your generous support will help continue the groundbreaking research that advances our understanding and treatment of microbial infections and immune responses. This research is critical in reducing the number of fatalities due to infection and equipping our society to better combat pandemics. Thank you for considering making a gift to this vital cause, and thank you for reading about my experience in the Department of Microbial Infection and Immunity and Dr. Seveau’s Lab.
