Hello everyone! My name is Rudra Kamat, and I’m a senior majoring in Neuroscience and minoring in Spanish on the pre-med track here at Ohio State. Throughout my time in college, I have been fortunate to get involved with several amazing organizations on campus including Buckeyes Raising Awareness in Neuroscience, Alpha Epsilon Delta, Pay It Forward and BuckeyeThon.
BuckeyeThon is the largest student-run philanthropy in the state of Ohio, which raises funds and awareness for the Hematology, Oncology, and Blood & Marrow Transplant Unit at Nationwide Children’s Hospital right here in Columbus. With only 4% of federal cancer funding going toward pediatric cancer research, the work we do in BuckeyeThon is crucial in making a difference for these children. Being a part of this organization has introduced me to some of my closest friends, and it’s truly inspiring to see so many students come together to support a cause bigger than ourselves.
Last year, I had the honor of serving as the Guest Experience and Personnel Coordinator within the Dance Marathon Committee, where I helped organize the 2024 Dance Marathon. This 12-hour event was the culmination of a year-long fundraising effort, raising $560,032.34 and bringing our organization’s total to $14.3 million over the past 22 years. This year, I am proud to serve as the Hospital Relations Coordinator for the Family Relations Committee, where I act as a liaison between BuckeyeThon, our Champion Families and Nationwide Children’s Hospital. One of the most rewarding parts of this role has been getting to know the incredible kids and their families who are some of the most resilient people I’ve met.
My experience in BuckeyeThon and at The Ohio State University have instilled in me the spirit of philanthropy and service, values I plan to carry with me on my journey to becoming a physician. I have chosen to fundraise for the BuckeyeThon Fund for Pediatric Cancer and am grateful for the opportunity to use the Homecoming Court platform to advocate for this cause, which is so close to my heart. Please join me in the fight to end pediatric cancer and blood disorders—because Every Kid Deserves to be a Buckeye.
