Hello Buckeyes! My name is Madison Mason, and I am in my 5th year studying Political Science here at The Ohio State University! Growing up I have always been incredibly close with my mom, Leslie. She is my best friend, my biggest cheerleader and my shoulder to cry on. Throughout my college career, my mom has always been there to support me and love me through good times and bad times; she has truly been my rock through it all! That is why at the beginning of my 4th year at Ohio State when I got the call she had been diagnosed with stage 3 breast cancer, my world literally turned upside down. The strongest woman that I knew was now struggling with a debilitating disease and fighting for her life every single day through her mastectomy, chemotherapy and radiation treatments. As her daughter I felt helpless, and all I could do was pray that she could receive the treatment she needed so the cancer didn’t take her away from me and our entire family.

Watching my mom's battle with breast cancer was one of the hardest experiences of my life, but it also opened my eyes and showed me just how important cancer treatment and research is, especially for cancer survivors and their families. I spent countless days and nights in the hospital by my mom's side, witnessing firsthand just how hard this journey was for her, and without the incredible care she received at the Stefanie Spielman Comprehensive Breast Center, she might not be here today. The dedication of the healthcare professionals at the Stefanie Spielman Comprehensive Breast Center not only saved my mom’s life, but also gave us hope during some of our darkest days. The doctors, nurses and support staff took care of her physical health, but they also made sure her mental and emotional well-being were looked after, which played a huge role in her healing process. It is because of the heroes at the Stefanie Spielman Comprehensive Breast Center that I can finally say my mom is in FULL REMISSION!

To show my appreciation for all they have done for my family and I, I'm fundraising for the Stefanie Spielman Fund for Breast Cancer Research. This fund supports crucial breast cancer research, including advancements in genetics, technology and patient care, which are essential in the fight against this disease. My goal is to raise as much as possible to support further research and patient care at the center, so no other family has to endure the uncertainty and fear that mine went through. Together, we can make strides toward a world where breast cancer is a thing of the past.
