Hello Buckeyes! My name is Bobby McAlpine, and I’m proud to be a senior here at Ohio State, majoring in City and Regional Planning. I'm passionate about leading my peers and building strong communities, whether it’s through my role as Student Body President for the entire Ohio State undergraduate student body or as a member of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. But right now, I’m raising awareness and funds for something even closer to home—Type 1 diabetes research.
During my sophomore year of high school, I noticed that I started to lose weight (over 22 pounds), drink gallons of water a day, feel tired all the time and just not want to participate in ANYTHING. I went to the doctor and when they took my blood sugar, it was off the charts and I had to be rushed to the hospital to avoid slipping into a major coma. That day, I was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes and from there on, my whole life changed. Dealing with my mortality at that young of an age really shook me. The total and complete lifestyle change affects every aspect of one’s life and while it's been a challenge, it has also shaped the person I am today. It has made me more resilient, determined and committed to making a difference. Diabetes, in all its forms, affects millions of Americans, including people right here on our campus and Ohio community. That’s why I’m using my platform on the homecoming court to support research for Type 1 diabetes, in hopes of finding better treatments and, one day, a cure.
Type 1 diabetes is a life-altering condition, but with support from the community, I believe we can help fund the advancements needed to change lives. Together, we can make a difference, not just for those like me living with Type 1 diabetes, but for all the families, friends and communities affected by this condition. Your support means the world to me and we can get a cure! Let's show the strength of Buckeye Nation and raise funds to move one step closer to a world without diabetes!
