Fast Facts

  • Studies show that children who have more books in their homes achieve higher levels of education and develop stronger literacy skills.
  • Keep Books® are consumable texts measuring 5 ½ x 4 ½ – designed to fit perfectly into children’s hands. As readers needs change, Keep Books® also change.
  • Keep Books®
    • provide a great deal of easy reading material so children get lots of practice.
    • provide opportunities for children to notice how words “work” and learn phonics skills.
    • include many high-frequency words that children read again and again, thus building word knowledge.
    • make it possible for children to read on their own rather than always depending on adults.
    • help children build confidence in themselves as readers.
  • Thanks to donor support, a partnership with Columbus Division of Police officers has provided more than 17,000 Keep Books®  to Columbus City Schools.
  • Keep Books® also help with practicing writing skills. “… we paired them with a writing lesson activity and sent a copy of the book home for them to keep and continue reading with their families.” – Lisa Chappell, Broadleigh Elementary Literacy Coach.
  • Keep Books® is a program of Ohio State’s College of Education and Human Ecology.

“When children are just beginning to read, they need access to easy-to-read books that are, very often, hard to find,” said Jamie Lipp, lead of Literacy Collaborative in the Department of Teaching and Learning at Ohio State. “While children can borrow books from the library or school, it is a wonderful experience for them to collect and own books they can ‘keep’."

“It is our shared hope that these little books make big differences in the lives of the children in our community.”
