Engineers for Community Service (ECOS) is a student organization that promotes social responsibility through local and international service projects, in which students who use their engineering skills and knowledge to tackle the issues facing marginalized communities. Since 2004, ECOS has received numerous university awards for its community impact, including the campus-wide Student Group Award for Excellence in Community Service.
Each semester, the Wheelchair Ramp team collaborates with the College of Social Work and the Wexner Medical Center to identify a Columbus-area resident who is in need of a ramp to improve the accessibility of their home, but is unable to afford it. After creating a design which caters to the resident’s specific needs, the team constructs a ramp over the course of about six weeks. Since the project’s inception in 2006, ECOS is proud to have planned and built almost 20 ramps in the Columbus area for those in need. As a result of the large amount of supplies, tools, and other necessities needed for each ramp to come to fruition, this project is the most financially intensive that ECOS supports. On average, the building materials cost $1,200 each semester. This month, in order to ensure the continued impact that the project has provided for over a decade, ECOS is seeking contributions to assist with construction-related costs.

With your $5 contribution, the project team will be able to purchase a bag of cement mix, used in the foundation of the ramp.
With your $25 contribution, the project team will be able to purchase a package of wood screws, used to hold the lumber of the ramp together.
With your $50 contribution, the project team will be able to provide the shovels necessary for digging before the ramp is constructed.
With your $75 contribution, the project team will be able to purchase approximately 100 feet of pressure-treated lumber - wood makes up the majority of the cost of this project.
With your $100 contribution, the project team will be able to purchase a circular saw, used for cutting lumber to size.
With your $250 contribution, the project team will be able to obtain a city building permit, required before construction begins.
