Expanding Access to Breast Cancer Care in Ghana

We are partnering with The Kubi Foundation to establish a breast cancer clinic in Kansana, Ghana, addressing critical gaps in cancer care, awareness, and medical record-keeping. Preliminary research indicates a rising incidence of breast cancer in Ghana, compounded by insufficient treatment options and low awareness due to inadequate medical documentation. This initiative aims to expand access to women’s healthcare in underserved regions while simultaneously laying the groundwork for a national cancer registry to improve medical research and patient care.

Our team has been involved in every aspect of this project, from coordinating construction—overseeing everything from laying the foundation to installing solar panels—to securing medical equipment and forming partnerships with local hospitals and government agencies. In addition to clinic development, we are conducting epidemiological research to better understand the burden of disease and the current state of breast cancer screening and treatment in Ghana. Through collaboration with hospitals and public health officials, we are working to establish a sustainable system of medical documentation that will enhance future research and treatment strategies.

This initiative has provided us with an unparalleled educational experience, expanding our medical training beyond traditional clinical settings. As future physicians, we are learning to assess community healthcare needs, design and develop a medical facility, and navigate the complexities of global healthcare systems. From a research perspective, we are gaining firsthand experience in international IRB processes, conducting large-scale epidemiological studies, and establishing a foundational medical record registry that will contribute to long-term improvements in cancer care in Ghana. These are invaluable skills that traditional medical education does not typically provide, reinforcing our commitment to global health initiatives.

Lastly, this project would enable us to directly interface with and meet the communities we are serving. We strongly believe in centering the voices of the members of the community who will directly benefit from these initiatives. We believe that they know what is best for their community and we serve as a bridge to help them achieve their healthcare goals. Hence, their direct input yields a greater benefit than any cost from our travels.

While the majority of this project has been funded through donations, we are seeking assistance with funding flights to Ghana so that our team of students can be a part of the grand opening of the clinic in December 2025 in Accra, Ghana.
