Join me in providing access to the Washington Academic Internship program.
Hi everyone! My name is Aly Murphy, and I’m a fourth-year Political Science major with minors in Agricultural Communication and Civic Engagement. I’m proud to be from small-town Greenfield, Ohio, and even prouder to be representing rural students across the state on this year’s Homecoming Court. At Ohio State, I’ve found so many opportunities that have shaped who I am—but none have impacted me quite like the Washington Academic Internship Program (WAIP).
As a rural student from Appalachia, WAIP gave me more than just an eye-opening semester in the nation’s capital. It gave me confidence. It gave me community. And it gave me a clearer vision for how I want to serve others, especially those from places like my hometown. Through WAIP, I interned at the White House as a Public Affairs intern for the Office of the United States Trade Representative, where I worked on trade issues that directly impact communities like mine. But even before I stepped into that office, I was surrounded by Buckeye mentors and peers who encouraged me to lead boldly and reminded me that rural voices belong at every table. That original D.C. experience continues to shape my journey. I spent this past summer back in D.C. as a congressional intern for Congresswoman Marcy Kaptur, an opportunity that was only possible because of the skills, confidence, and professional connections I gained through WAIP.
That’s why I’ve chosen to fundraise for the Washington Academic Internship Program Support Fund, which supports students in the program with scholarships, experiences, and more. D.C. is expensive, and for students like me, that financial burden can be the biggest barrier. Scholarships made it possible for me to take on this experience without worrying about how I’d afford rent—and that freedom allowed me to fully show up, learn, and grow. This fund ensures more students, especially those from underrepresented and underserved backgrounds, can access the same life-changing experience.
Supporting this fund is about more than just raising money—it’s about creating pathways. Pathways for students who want to lead, serve, and change the world, but just need the chance. WAIP helped me find my place and purpose in public service, and I’m proud to help make that journey possible for the next generation of Buckeyes. If you believe in the power of access, leadership, and turning potential into action, I hope you’ll consider joining me in supporting this incredible cause. Let’s open doors for the next generation of Buckeyes ready to make a difference.
