Join me in supporting free legal care for immigrants in Columbus.
Hi Buckeyes! My name is Jocelyn Rojas-Ramirez, and I’m a fourth-year Biology major here at The Ohio State University. I'm incredibly honored to be part of this year’s Homecoming Court, and even more excited to use this opportunity to highlight a cause that’s close to my heart: The Immigration Law Clinic at Moritz College of Law. My story, like so many others, is rooted in the sacrifices and dreams of my parents, who immigrated to the United States in search of opportunity. As a first-generation college student, I owe so much of who I am and where I am to their strength, perseverance, and love. They've been my biggest support system, from late nights studying to moments of doubt, they've always believed in me, even when the path wasn’t always clear. Coming to Ohio State was more than just a goal; it was a milestone for my entire family. And now, being able to give back through Homecoming Court feels like a full-circle moment. That’s why I’ve chosen to support the Immigration Law Clinic, a program that provides free legal representation to immigrants in Columbus who are facing deportation and other complex legal challenges.
The clinic plays a vital role in the community by offering immigrants who often cannot afford attorneys the chance to have skilled legal help. Navigating immigration law can be overwhelming, with high stakes that impact a person’s ability to stay in the country, reunite with family, or find safety from persecution. The clinic’s work includes everything from interviewing clients and preparing their cases, to legal research and representing them in immigration court. For many immigrants, the clinic is more than just legal support, it’s a lifeline that offers hope and stability during uncertain times. It can mean the difference between separation and keeping a family together, between losing a home or building a future in Columbus. This clinic not only changes individual lives, but also strengthens our broader community by helping ensure that everyone has access to justice. At Ohio State, students involved in the clinic gain hands-on experience while making a real difference in people’s lives. The work done here reflects our Buckeye values: fairness, compassion and service. Supporting this clinic means standing up for families, for dignity, and for the promise of opportunity that brought so many to this country.
Thank you for taking the time to read my story and for supporting a cause that means the world to me and to so many others at The Ohio State University.
