Outreach
IJS reaches out beyond OSU to disseminate information on Japan to various constituencies. In addition to collaborating with other Ohio-based community colleges, colleges, and universities, IJS works closely with the Ohio Association of Teachers of Japanese, which celebrated their 25th Anniversary this fall, and conducts outreach to K-12 schools. Further, IJS co-sponsors annual community events, such as those offered by the Japanese Student Organization and the Japan-America Society of Central Ohio, a not-for-profit membership association of Ohioans who desire to promote and exchange goodwill through the sharing of knowledge about Japan and provide a forum for informed discussion regarding the U.S.-Japan relationship.
Over the past two years, IJS has hosted or co-sponsored 30 events impacting over 2,835 attendees. Our support of the annual Columbus Cherry Blossom Festival, the Japan Bowl for Ohio high school students, the Japanese Language Speech Contest, and the Ohio Association of Teachers of Japanese workshops are just some examples of our outreach efforts. Additionally, EASC/IJS helped fund 14 undergraduate student internships in Japan in summer 2025 with support from a Freeman Foundation grant.
Leading IJS, Brad Richardson has a long history of outreach through his leadership roles:
Honorary Consul General of Japan for Ohio: Brad Richardson was Honorary Consul General of Japan for Ohio from 1999- 2004 to strengthen the U.S.–Japan relations, especially through Japan’s growing ties with the State of Ohio.
Japan-America Society of Central Ohio (JASCO): Bard Richardson was a founding member of the Executive Board of the Japan-America Society of Central Ohio (JASCO) in 1997 and served many roles on its board and programming committee through 2015.
Ohio-Saitama Sister State Relationship: Through the Ohio-Saitama Sister State relationship, he established the Ohio-Saitama Company Internship program in which 88 Ohio students from 12 universities, including 43 from The Ohio State University; and 29 students from Saitama universities participated during 1991-2014.

BRML Oct 29
On October 29, the Institute for Japanese Studies (IJS) commemorated its 40th anniversary with the 10th annual Brad Richardson Memorial Lecture (BRML), delivered by Dr. Aiji Tanaka, President of Waseda University. In his lecture, “Reflections on Professor Bradley M. Richardson and the Legacy of The Ohio State University,” Dr. Tanaka shared personal memories of his time as a graduate student under Professor Richardson’s mentorship at Ohio State. His reflections honored Professor Richardson’s profound academic and personal influence, and served as a moving tribute to the vision that led to the founding of IJS in 1985.
Dr. Tanaka’s talk inspired renewed appreciation for Brad Richardson’s enduring legacy and the Institute’s mission to promote Japanese Studies at Ohio State and beyond. In celebration of this milestone, I’m pleased to share with you the following:

Research and Instruction
IJS supports the university’s academic mission by contributing to Japan-related research and instruction in various ways. IJS administered the annual Japanese government-sponsored Japanese Language Proficiency Test from 2014 through 2019 which provided hundreds of examinees the opportunity to certify their language ability. IJS has also contributed to the field of Japanese linguistics by hosting the Journal of Japanese Linguistics for several years. Further, IJS contributes to the development of international linkages by meeting with delegations from the Japanese government and Japanese academic institutions interested in pursuing partnerships with The Ohio State University.

IJS Leadership
Leadership of IJS throughout the years
Through this campaign, we seek to continue the legacy of Dr. Bradley Richardson and the Institute for Japanese Studies that he founded by raising funds to continue the academic, educational and outreach programs he started. In honor of the 40th anniversary of the Institute of Japanese Studies (1985–2025) and the 10th anniversary of the Brad Richardson Memorial Fund, we invite 40 donors to contribute to the fund by November 30, 2025. Your support will help continue Dr. Richardson’s legacy and strengthen Japanese Studies at Ohio State for years to come.
The Institute for Japanese Studies (IJS) was founded in 1985 by the State of Ohio funds. During the early years, the IJS created three faculty positions in DEALL, one in Anthropology, and one in Business. After the cessation of state funding in 1995, major funding sources for the activities include the US Department of Education’s Title VI through EASC (through 2025), and various grants and projects. The IJS programming and activities were led by seven directors since 1985:

- Dr. Richard Torrance: 2005 – 2015
- Dr. J. Marshall Unger (Interim): 2008-2009
- Dr. Hajime Miyazaki: 2015 - 2020
- Dr. Etsuyo Yuasa (Interim): Autumn 2020
- Dr. Naomi Fukumori: 2021 - present
