Medical Alumni Society Merit Scholarship Recipient and MD candidate in the Class of 2020, Cecelia Favede, says that ever since she was a child she has had experiences that have affirmed her decision to become a doctor. One of those instances occurred when she was a college sophomore on a medical service trip in Lima, Peru. Favede spent the day with a 5-year old girl named Rosanna who had lost her father and whose mother was diagnosed with stage IV ovarian cancer. “We had spent less than six hours together,” Favede recalls, “but as I was leaving, she said she had been praying for an angel to come, and she said I was that angel. I realized that as a physician, those were the kind of children and situations I could have a direct impact on. It reaffirmed what I should be doing.”

Favede says the Medical Alumni Society Merit Scholarship gives her a chance to realize her dream of combining her two passions of science and service. “It’s an opportunity to use my God-given talents to make the world a better place.”
