Symphonic Band Tour to Washington D.C

Help the musicians of The Ohio State University Symphonic Band perform in our Nation’s Capital! Financial resources for this tour are being garnered collaboratively between The Ohio State University School of Music, donors, and the student musicians - who are 50% first-year students, 80% music education majors, 10% majors outside of music. Reaching the $10,000 goal for this BuckeyeFunder campaign would enable all student musicians to take part in the tour with little-to-no individual expense. We are fortunate to have a donor who is matching dollar-for-dollar the funds raised during this campaign.

The musicians of The Ohio State University Symphonic Band will be taking part in a seven-day tour immediately following completion of semester examinations in May, 2018. Nearly 18 months of planning has resulted in an enriching set of performances, engagements and interactions in Pittsburgh, PA and the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area. The musical centerpiece of the tour is a shared performance with the United States Army Band "Pershing's Own" at the beautiful Rachel M. Schlesinger Concert Hall in Alexandria, VA. We believe that performance will mark the first such interaction between a Washington, D.C. Military Band and a concert band from Ohio State. The Symphonic Band is honored to also being sharing performances with the Norwin High School Wind Ensemble (Tim Daniels, conductor), the George Mason University Wind Symphony (Mark Camphouse, conductor) and the Virginia Grand Military Band (Loras Schissel, conductor). Residencies with high school students at Norwin High School and Annandale High School (Joseph Witkowski, conductor) are also scheduled while on tour.

In addition to musical performance, students will take part in a Wreath Laying Ceremony at Arlington National Cemetery, a guided tour of the United States Capitol, the National Museum of African American History and Culture, the Library of Congress, and a host of other historical and cultural experiences.

Thank you for your assistance in reaching the $10,000 goal for this BuckeyeFunder campaign. Remember that we have a generous donor who is matching dollar-for-dollar the funds raised during this campaign, so each individual contribution is doubled!

Levels
Choose a giving level

$10

Motive

A short musical idea, a salient recurring figure, musical fragment or succession of notes. Without this small structural unit of music, a symphony would not be possible.

$25

Phrase

An expression that has a complete musical sense of its own, built from motives and other smaller musical ideas, combining to make larger musical structures.

$50

Theme

The melodic subject matter of a piece of music. A theme is built from multiple phrases, and is the recognizable melody upon which a composition is typically based.

$100

Movement

A self-contained part of a musical composition or musical form, that is the result of the thoughtful presentation and development of musical themes. Individual movements of a symphony can be performed separately, and provide a satisfying experience to the listener.

$250

Symphony

An extended musical composition comprised of several movements, typically four. The symphony is the entirety of the musical journey, bringing each of the musical motives, phrases, themes, and movements into a unified whole.
