This year’s “Life’s Short, Eat Dessert First” fundraising event has certainly been different. No matter how difficult 2020 has been, you found a way to support my annual event benefitting The Stefanie Spielman Fund for Breast Cancer Research. I’m exceedingly grateful and thrilled with the results of the online Silent Auction – raising $6,643! And online donations continue to roll in and add up. THANK YOU to everyone who has contributed in one way or another. The online donation website will continue to be open for monetary donations through the end of 2020.
I especially want to recognize those businesses who have faced challenges in 2020, yet found a way to make a donation for my Silent Auction. Please support these businesses, so they may continue in years to come.

Dr. Bhuvaneswari Ramaswamy is a caring, compassionate professional oncologist. She joined the OSUCCC – James as a breast medical oncologist in 2006 and has been very active in clinical and translational research in breast cancer. I count my lucky stars every day to have her as my Medical Oncologist.
Dr. Ramaswamy was the featured speaker at my Life’s Short, Eat Dessert First fundraiser in 2018 and her research has benefited from dollars raised by Life’s Short, Eat Dessert First.
As a member of the Translational Therapeutics Program, her research is focused on investigating the biology of breast tumors at the molecular level to identify characteristics of tumors that are resistant to hormone-based therapeutics, such as tamoxifen and aromatase inhibitors. With this information, researchers can develop alternative therapies to treat hormone-resistant tumors. She is also interested in cancer disparities, particularly the relationship between prolonged breastfeeding and the risk of developing triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC). She is the principal investigator of multiple clinical trials, has co-authored many articles and is the recipient of several research grants.
Dr. Ramaswamy was recognized by Forbes as one of the top 27 breast medical oncologists in the nation, received the Stellar Practitioner for Compassionate Care Recognition from patients and caregivers as an exceptional physician and was also selected as one of five women at Ohio State who have distinguished themselves as “Medical Center Marvels” and featured in Health1 magazine.
In 2016, Dr. Ramaswamy herself was diagnosed with breast cancer and gained an even better appreciation for what her patients go through during and after chemotherapy and radiation treatments.
Two time All-American at Ohio State, Lombardi Award winner, and All-Pro in the NFL. Chris played 11 years in the NFL for the Detroit Lions, Buffalo Bills, and the Cleveland Browns and was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 2009. And for you trivia buffs – Chris was the 1st High School athlete to have his picture on a box of Wheaties!
Chris Spielman is famous for being tough, intense, dedicated to football. But he walked away from it to help his wife fight breast cancer. He found his biggest opponent to be off the field. Chris continues the fight he and Stefanie started together shortly after her first diagnosis in 1998.
New and innovative drugs are being developed at the OSUCCC – James with the help of the Stefanie Spielman Fund for Breast Cancer Research. Breakthroughs in cancer treatments are being made and the goal of ending cancer is closer to reality.
Stefanie said: “With each year, each month, and each day there are new breakthroughs and possibilities in the fight against cancer.” These words have given Chris and the Spielman family the strength and determination to carry on her dream of ending this terrible disease.
The Spielman family shows how we can rise up even when fate tries to hold us down. Chris’ life has order: Faith, Family and Community – and he lives it daily in that order.
Maddie was 4 years old when her mom, Stefanie, was first diagnosed with breast cancer. Maddie saw up close how her parents lived their lives following the diagnosis.
Before Stefanie passed, Maddie promised her mom she would never use her death as an excuse for anything, but motivation for everything.
Maddie has graciously spoken at my “Life’s Short, Eat Dessert First” events as she continues Stefanie’s legacy in putting an end to cancer. Her uplifting message provides hope and inspiration for all who hear her.
