Ohio State's women's chapter of the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) is dedicated to supporting, celebrating and advocating for the full engagement of women in all aspects of the computing field. As one of the oldest ACM-W chapters in the world, founded in 2003, ACM-W has sustained strong partnerships with corporate sponsors, including Google, Capital One, JP Morgan Chase and more. These partnerships enable ACM-W to host weekly meetings that feature professional development workshops, networking events, socials, a mentorship program and more.
As an inclusive organization, ACM-W welcomes all genders and majors as allies or supporters of its mission. By mentoring, volunteering and encouraging women to get involved in CS, ACM-W has been able to quickly scale its impact, sending four times the number of attendees to GHC than it did just a few years ago. ACM-W is proud to be a part of the global effort to increase diversity and inclusion in the computing field, and it looks forward to continuing its important work in the years to come. ACM-W is a leading organization in the College of Engineering at The Ohio State University, and it's impact extends beyond Ohio State's campus. This year, ACM-W received a total of seven awards, including five from Ohio State Student Life and two from the Engineers Council.
These awards include:
Since 2014, ACM-W has sponsored students to attend the Grace Hopper Celebration (GHC), the largest conference for women in computing with more than 30,000 attendees. In recent years, ACM-W has significantly increased its presence at GHC, sponsoring 20 attendees on a full scholarship last year in 2022. ACM-W's scholarships program offers several tiers of financial assistance, ranging from 50% of conference costs covered up to 100% covered, allowing almost every student to attend.
Grace Hopper Conference (GHC) is an international 3-day technical conference highlighting and celebrating the achievements of women in the technology field, as well as empowering all minorities in tech to make a place for themselves in the tech industry. It occurs annually and features speakers, technical talks, workshops, a career fair with hundreds of companies, networking, poster showcases and awards for remarkable technical women. The conference's namesake, Admiral Grace Hopper, was a rear admiral in the U.S. Navy in the late 1900's and a contributor to the compiler for the COBOL programming language, and is today a worldwide role model to women in the technical field. Students, young professionals and seasoned pros alike are all welcomed at Grace Hopper Conference to expand their technology skills, explore the industry and meet peers.
Our goal is to provide full scholarships to 20 students to the 2023 Grace Hopper Celebration, and we would love to increase this number if your support makes it possible.
