We are the Ohio State chapter of Engineers Without Borders (EWB). At EWB-Ohio State, we use engineering concepts to empower communities and meet basic human needs. We are dedicated to creating long-term connections with different communities to create long-lasting solutions. Our chapter has over 75 active members from a variety of disciplines, all committed to creating a difference in the lives of others. We are currentlEngineer without borders students connect with the community members for a photoy working with 2 international communities. The first is in the village of Njau in the Gambia, Africa, where we have successfully implemented a robust origination system and water tank. The second is in the village of Carrera, Ecuador where we are going to construct a 2 classroom addition atop an existing school building in order to accommodate the village’s children.

In The Gambia, a small country on the western tip of Africa surrounded by Senegal, is where you will find the village of N’jau. The Gambia project was originally an agricultural project starting in 2016. The communities’ garden was being trampled by animals and so they asked for a fence that was installed on the first implementation trip. Our partnership with the community next focused on the need for a significant increase of irrigation capacity and we have installed a bore hole, 12 water taps and two 5,000 L water tanks that are filled via solar powered pumps. Along with the community, we are working with the Women’s Initiative of Gambia (WIG) and local contractors to complete this project. We are working to finish the original scope of the project this year and are looking to work with the community to expand the project objectives with a marketplace and cold storage. A travel team is currently on their way to Njau to perform more permanent repaEngineer without border students tour the school building in the communityirs on the fence and work with the community to shape out the future of our partnership with them.

Since 2021, EWB-Ohio State has been working with the community of Carrera, Ecuador. The community does not currently have enough classrooms to serve its student population, so multiple grades are forced to share one classroom. The proposed project aims to construct two new classrooms as a second story on top of one of the existing school buildings. Six members of our chapter traveled to Carrera, Ecuador in July of 2022 to conduct initial technical testing and establish a relationship with the community. We plan to return in December 2023 to begin the construction of the second story. Your contribution will help us purchase materials to hire contractors to build the two new classrooms. Your donations can help us make this project a reality and improve the quality for the children of Carrera.

Through your donation, you will be promoting sustainable change for communities in desperate need. In addition, your generosity will allow our student members to gain the invaluable experience of planning and executing a real world engineering project as students. Our organization and communities of Njau and Carrera are extremely grateful for your support.
