History of the OSU Jazz Fest

January 30, 2017

In preparation for the 40th annual OSU Jazz Festival, we sat down with the two former Jazz ensemble directors and talked about the history of the Jazz Fest. Here you will see them talk about what makes this festival so great - and what we would like to pay homage to this year.

Don't forget to join us for the performance of our newly commissioned work on March 25th in Weigel Hall.

Meet The Project Composer: Mr. Anthony Stanco

January 18, 2017

We are thrilled to have the talents of Mr. Anthony Stanco at our disposal. Mr. Stanco will be composing the very first commission the OSU Jazz Ensemble has ever done! This piece will be performed live at the 40th annual OSU Jazz Festival. Here you will find a recent interview we did with Mr. Stanco to talk about his background and what this project means to him.

We are continually grateful for the support and the talents of everyone involved in this project.

As a way to say thank you to all 2017 Buckeye Funder Composition Commission Project donors, a list of donor names will be provided in our program for the February 10 performance.

A return to rehearsal and video interviews to come!

January 06, 2017

Such an amazing first week for our 2017 Buckeye Funder Composition Commission Project...Thank you donors!! We are humbled by all of the support this far. Help us continue to get closer to our goal and share your love for this project with friends.

Don't forget to frequently check in with our Buckeye Funder page as we add various video interviews over the next three weeks. Project videos will include interviews with past and present Ohio State University Jazz Studies directors Tom Battenburg, Dr. Ted McDaniel, and Shawn "Thunder" Wallace as well as our three part series, "Meet The Project Composer: Mr. Anthony Stanco".

Winter break is ending and things are starting to heat up again around campus. Beginning next week the University Jazz Ensemble with director Kristopher D. Keith start rehearsing for the upcoming semester. Before our performance at the 40th Annual Ohio State University Jazz Festival in March with Byron Stripling (trumpet) and our premier of this project composition we have a major performance on Friday, February 10 at 8pm in Weigel Auditorium.

This very special performance on February 10 is a tribute to John Coltrane's legendary 1964 quartet recording "A Love Supreme" (McCoy Tyner piano, Jimmy Garrison bass, Elvin Jones drums). Arranged for big band by Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra director Wynton Marsalis, this brilliant newly published arrangement takes Coltrane's composition in new directions and is a must hear. Joining us will be special guest speaker, retired OSU Jazz Studies director Dr. Ted McDaniel providing a brief historical discussion of John Coltrane and this ground breaking recording, "A Love Supreme".

Also, as a way to say thank you to all 2017 Buckeye Funder Composition Commission Project donors, a list of donor names will be provided in our program for the February 10 performance.
