Meet Maddax Ranly and Berkley Zurn: Two Changemakers Taking On Cancer with Heart, Grit, and Buckeye Spirit

This fall, Maddax Ranly and Berkley Zurn are taking a bold step toward their futures—and toward a cause that has captured their hearts. Maddax and Berkley are applying Early Decision to The Ohio State University, but their applications are more than just college essays and transcripts—they’re launching pads for something bigger.

These two young adults are stepping up in a huge way to support The James Cancer Hospital and Solove Research Institute, one of the nation’s top cancer research centers. Known simply as The James, this world-class facility at Ohio State is not just a hospital—it’s a beacon of hope. With more than 300 cancer subspecialists and a commitment to precision medicine, The James is rewriting the story of cancer treatment. Its researchers are pioneering immunotherapies, targeting the disease at the genetic level, and giving patients across the country real chances at real cures.

Maddax’s connection to this mission is deeply personal and rooted in compassion. He has spent the last year serving as a big brother with Saving Amy to two incredible young boys, accompanying them to doctor appointments, tutoring them through school challenges, and simply showing up with laughter, games, and the kind of support every child deserves. He’s a steady hand and a big heart—someone who gives without question and leads by example.

Berkley, equally dedicated, has logged countless hours volunteering in the community, finding meaning in service and impact in every interaction. As a legacy of the Buckeye Nation, Berkley is passionate to continue making OSU a great place to be and one that rises for her community. Together, these two friends have launched a heartfelt mission to “Mac Out Cancer”—raising awareness and funds for The James and the cutting-edge work happening there every day.

Their goal? To rally support not just from their school or their town, but from all over the country. Because they believe—and they know—that cancer doesn’t stand a chance when passion, innovation, and community come together.

As Maddax and Berkley turn their focus toward Buckeye Nation, they’re not just applying to a university—they’re stepping into a lifelong mission of leadership, service, and hope. And they’re inviting us all to join them.

Because when two students from Arizona decide to change the world, you better believe they’re starting in Columbus.

Support their campaign. Share their story. Help them Mac Out Cancer—one step, one smile, and one Buckeye at a time.
