60 Years of Slavic, East European and Eurasian Studies
Founded 60 years ago in 1965 by Professor Leon Twarog, the Center for Slavic, East European and Eurasian Studies (CSEEES) supports the study of Central Asia, Central Europe, Eastern Europe, Eurasia, Russia, and Southeastern Europe at The Ohio State University. CSEEES' overall goal is to promote the study, knowledge, and teaching of this region and its languages at The Ohio State University, in the state of Ohio, in the Midwest, and beyond. In addition to fostering East European and Eurasian language and area studies on campus, CSEEES has an outreach program that extends throughout the state of Ohio and the Midwest. Since 1988, CSEEES has administered an interdisciplinary Master of Arts degree, and has educated nearly 200 experts with high-level language skills and cultural expertise to work in business, government and education.
Funds are being sought to continue and strengthen Ohio State’s already strong tradition of Slavic, East European and Eurasian Studies: funding student professional development, travel and research in the region, a vibrant events calendar, outreach across the state of Ohio, teacher trainings available around the world, and support for students to study less-commonly taught languages, currently including Bosnian, Croatian, Modern Greek, Polish, Romanian, Russian, Serbian, Ukrainian, Uzbek and Yiddish.
We met our original goal of 60 donors for 60 years of Slavic, East European and Eurasian Studies with 9 days remaining in the campaign. However, we have learned that our National Resource Center and Foreign Language and Area Studies grants from the U.S. Department of Education are paused and we are unsure if we will receive the 4th year of funding (intended to cover the 2025-2026 academic year and summer 2026). Fortunately, the university administration is covering our most urgent needs while we wait for more information. Our goal is now to raise as much money as possible to backstop our programming and support our students. Help us continue our tradition of excellence!
