2023 Moritz DC Program - last call!

May 15, 2023

Hi friends of the Moritz DC Summer Program! At the law school we are officially in summer mode now, with Hooding having occurred last Friday, and the DC Program's kick-off cookout happening tonight!

We have just two days left in the BuckeyeFunder campaign for this year, so this is my "last call" to see if we might be able to offer some additional assistance to our 2023 participants.

You can find the 2023 campaign here (with a video pitch still from Chris Walker -- I'll do my own video for next year!)

If you have been thinking about donating (or can be invited to think about it now!), please go to the 2023 campaign page today.

Thank you so much for your continuing support!

Second call for 2023 Moritz DC Program

April 26, 2023

Hello Moritz DC Summer Program supporters! I hope that most of you received an email from me earlier this month (though it was not sent through this Buckeye Funder platform) about this year's Moritz DC Summer Law Program. In case you missed that email, I have taken over the program director role from Professor Chris Walker. I am really excited to be in this role and I look forward to being back in DC!

You have each offered generous support in past years, and we would be so grateful if you were able to contribute again to our 2023 Buckeye Funder campaign. This initiative helps to defray what are significant costs of the program for our students, and we are always looking for ways to make the program more accessible. With your help, we can make our third annual Buckeye Funder campaign a huge success.

You can find the 2023 campaign here

Thank you for your support!

Moritz DC Summer Program Reception with Dean Davies

July 08, 2022

Thanks again for donating to the Buckeye Funder for the DC 2022 Summer Program. Next week is our final week of classes, and it's been an amazing summer. As part of the final week of classes, Dean Davies is hosting a reception at The Dubliner from 6-7:30PM this coming Wednesday, 7/13. I hope you've already received an invitation from the law school directly, but I thought I'd send out a separate note in case you didn't. You can register here: https://osu.az1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_ezIoTxmUmheB4cm

Final Update: We Reached Our $20,000 Goal

February 24, 2022

Due to a very generous gift on the last day of the Buckeye Funder initiative, we were able to reach our goal of $20,000.  I wanted to thank each of you for making a donation this year, and for sharing the Buckeye Funder with other friends of Moritz.  The funds raised go directly to cover the tuition and living expenses of the students in this summer's program.  I know that are so, so grateful for your support. So am I.

Thanks so much,

Christopher J. Walker

Update from DC Program Alum Katy Scruppi, Moritz Class of 2020

February 02, 2022

I was a part of the 2018 D.C. Summer Program class. I worked for the U.S. Senate Committee on Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs for then-Ranking Member and current Chairman Senator Sherrod Brown. I came to law school with two missions: learn more about the innerworkings of our government, and use that knowledge to help people navigate and change the law. Working for the U.S. Senate was hugely helpful in achieving that first goal.

On June 27, 2018, I was at the Supreme Court, listening to the Justices read their opinions and dissents for the last day of the Term. One of the cases was Janus v. AFSCME, which would inspire me to take more courses at Moritz on labor and employment law. At the end of the session, Chief Justice Roberts said that there were some retirements to announce. I remember holding my breath, waiting to see if Justice Kennedy would announce his rumored retirement. Instead, Justice Roberts thanked important members of the Supreme Court staff for their long and important service. We all shuffled out of the room, and I made my way back to the Senate office building. Five minutes after sitting in front of my computer, the TVs blazed red with the breaking news that Justice Kennedy had announced his retirement. It is a day I will never forget.

The summer after the D.C. Program, I returned to D.C. to intern for the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. As I write this testimonial, I serve as a law clerk to an administrative law judge in the U.S. Department of Labor. The D.C. Summer Program is a phenomenal way to get your foot in the door in the federal government as a law student in Ohio.

However, D.C. is one of the most expensive cities in the country. Many students cannot consider the program because the combination of the cost of the courses, D.C. cost of living, and an unpaid summer job (which is most internships in D.C.) is prohibitive. Generous donors like you can help a more diverse population of students launch their legal careers through this incredible program. I hope you'll consider donating and encouraging others to donate.

Cheers,

Katy Scruppi (she/her)

Update from DC Program Alum Shea Daley, Moritz Class of 2022

January 27, 2022

During the summer of 2020, I worked as an extern at the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit. I knew that I had a desire to clerk after law school and prioritized finding a judicial externship. I would not have found such an incredible opportunity without the D.C. Program, including Professor Walker’s guidance preparing my application and preparing for my interview. My work that summer confirmed my interest in clerking and is a large part of the reason I applied for my future clerkship position at the Ohio Supreme Court.

My summer experience likely contributed to my successful search for a summer associate position for my 2L summer. The research, writing, and bluebooking skills I obtained during my externship prepared me for that position as well as the many seminars I have taken since and the roles I have held on the Ohio State Journal of Criminal Law as an Associate Editor during 2L and currently as Editor-in-Chief.

One stressor for many deciding to participate in the D.C. Program is the cost. I was fortunate to have military benefits to assist with much of the cost, but many of my friends in the program had to take out additional loans. The benefits of participating in the program are priceless, including both the externship opportunities and the classes we take with Professor Walker during the summer program. The program was a feasible option for me because some of the costs were offset, and any donation from generous donors like yourself will help make the program a more feasible option for others.

Please consider donating to help future D.C. Program students have the same amazing experience.

[Note from Professor Walker: As of today, we have raised more than $11,000 from more than 60 donations. Thanks so much for your support! 15 days left to reach our goal of $20,000. Thank you!]

Hi Fellow Buckeyes (& Friends of Buckeyes)!

Greetings from Vermont! I wanted to record a message on the 4th highest peak in the state over the weekend, but it turns out the summit of a 4,000+ foot mountain where the temperature is -8 isn’t a place you can stay for long—so this little note will have to do! (Don’t let this photo deceive you—this is from a November hike on a much shorter mountain!). Thank you so much to everyone who has contributed to the campaign so far! Your donations will go a long way as a part of a fundamental stepping stone in a Moritz student’s future career.

As a 2019 alum of the D.C. Program, I can’t stress enough how important the program was in placing me on the path I’m following now. I picked Moritz primarily because of the program. Because of the fantastic experience I had at the Department of Transportation while in the program, I spent multiple semesters afterwards (and my 2L summer) working in different branches of government, both state and federal. Currently, I’m clerking on the Second Circuit Court of Appeals in Burlington, Vermont, after a short stint with the Supreme Court of Vermont—two dream jobs! In the fall I will begin another dream job with the Department of Justice as an Honor’s Attorney in the Civil Division’s Commercial Litigation Branch—and I can’t wait to be a career agency attorney. I can draw a direct line from my experience my 1L summer to the place I am today, and the fierce passion for public service that the program and Professor Walker instilled in me. I am beyond thankful for the dedication he shows year after year to the program, and to his students.

Again, thank you for your donations—and even if you don’t have the means to donate, thank you for sharing the campaign. Let’s continue the excellence of our Buckeyes in D.C.!

Sincerely,
